Our Battle In The Desert, features Brian Wood MC. Brian was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry in combat, for courageous leadership in Iraq. He was later summoned for unfound war crimes, which eventually led to full vindication. His story is now the subject of a BBC2 film, Danny Boy and he has been open about his struggles with PTSD. He also supports Walking With The Wounded’s mental health programme.

Brian – I think we’ve raised about half a million. I was running for the fallen, who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Falklands as well. It just got so much momentum and I had my target of twenty thousand pounds. I thought that was really ambitious and I probably wouldn’t get there, but it’s a good target to have. Then it just went to the moon and everyone just seemed to get behind me. I went for 35 days, 35 marathons and then halfway through, I flew to the Falklands and ran four marathons there.

John Bosley is a former Sapper in the Royal Engineers. Unlike his father & brothers, who all joined the Parachute Regiment, John initially went for training with the Royal Marines. Thelma Bosley & six other people, were killed at Aldershot Barracks in 1972.

John – One of my brothers was very vocal in trying to get it addressed. It really rankered him over a long period. The Bloody Sunday inquiry went on over 12 years. The Northern Ireland troubles go back way longer than we acknowledge. It goes back to 800 years or so. The recent period of trouble started in the late sixties.

There was tensions between the Protestant loyalist Community and the Catholics. The Catholics were in favour of Northern Ireland becoming part of southern Ireland and being reunited into one country. Initially the British government deployed security there to protect the Catholics from attacks from the Protestants.

Sean spent 6 years with 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, serving as a PTI and one year with the reserves. Sean holds the positions of Managing Director of Forces Fitness Ltd, Founder of the Veterans Awards CIC and is also an ambassador for the Welsh Governments’ Big Ideas Wales program.

Sean – I went to the careers office and I was 18 years of age. I said, look I want to join the best Welsh regiment and who is it? This Welsh guards recruiting sergeant said, it’s the Welsh Guards son, so you come with me. Off I went to training and the first phase was Pirbright with the second phase up in Catterick. So plenty of hill training. I passed out after training, obviously and I remember getting off the train station in St James’s Park. If you know London very well, it’s near enough to Buckingham Palace. The first year of my military career was spent at Wellington Barracks, literally a stone’s throw away from Buckingham Palace.

George – I was going to a junior school at seven or eight years old and I was frightened of being hit. My natural feeling was how do I stop myself from being hit? The way to do that, was I didn’t want to go to school and so I’d scratch myself and scratch myself until I bled. I had a period of time off school, where my mum started taking me to the doctors and they said you need to go back to school.

My mum had a faith and she sent me to see a priest. She thought if I got some spiritual counsel, that would be okay. I got a more than spiritual counsel. as the priest raped me. He told me that if I told anyone what he was doing to me, that nobody would believe me.

Matt – When I first applied for the police, my application got shoved in the bin because of all the spelling and grammar mistakes. I never knew there were so many ways of saying, ‘there’. There’s a lot of people who are like that and t’s just the way it is. People didn’t get great educations when they were younger, so I had to reteach myself with English or maths and all that. Back then, having no qualifications didn’t stop me getting into places, you just had to do an entrance exam. I persevered, took ownership and worked my way through that and did the exam. I passed it so then it was on to the next phase where you have role plays and you assessed on how you deal with situations in a group.

Then it was an interview and then you do 15 weeks training. It’s like a military camp, only it’s a police one and we did our 15 weeks training there where you learned more. You did a bit of fitness, a swimming test and life-saving, but I wouldn’t say it was hard.

Kenny – The minute we got off the aircraft we were met by Shaun. He’s in the Republican ex-prisoner support group. We sat down with a cup of tea in Belfast airport and he said, look guys, you’re completely safe. Everyone wants to meet you. You’ve got nothing to worry about, all right boys? We were like, okay, cool, let’s go. It was straight to Derry. I mean literally getting a car and boom, straight to Derry.

Then on the video you can see my eyes are like, bloody hell you know? It’s freaking hell and I’m I’m sat down with the victims of Bloody Sunday. The guy says look, we’re not political or anything here and this is what the community went through. He showed us where the rounds went off on the bog side.

Britain’s Nuclear Threat, features Michael ‘Spud’ Taylor, a veteran of the cold-war. Mick served with 50 Missile Regiment Royal Artillery. Stationed in Germany as part of the BAOR, they used the Lance missile system, to eliminate Russian targets who had invaded NATO territory. It was estimated Mick and his colleagues would have been wiped out within 30 minutes if the cold war heated up.

Mike – I wanted to be a mechanic to be honest and that was the best way of getting qualified. 50 was the only new British nuclear regiment in the British army. I was in 51 Battery and I’ll say hello to all the lads if they’re watching. 51 Battery came from 24 Missile Regiment, which was based in Dortmund and they basically took it down and just made the one regiment. I think which was just 50. It was the only nuclear regiment in the British Army and I only recently learned that we had a 30-minute lifespan. I don’t know true this was. The Soviets at the time had special units to come and take us out.
