Falklands War Red & Green Life Machine, features Royal Navy Commando, Lt Cdr Paul Youngman, who’s actions during the war, saved many lives.

Falklands War Red & Green Life Machine | Royal Navy Commando

Lieutenant Commander Paul Youngman MID, entered the Royal Navy in 1975 and passed the All Arms Commando Course. As a Royal Navy Medical Branch rating he served up to Warrant Officer First Class. During his 37 year career as a Royal Navy Commando, he served in many areas of operations including Northern Ireland, The Falklands War, Gulf War 1, Cambodia, Kosovo, Gulf War 2 and Afghanistan. Paul was a Leading Medical Assistant attached to 45 Commando Group, during the Falklands War. For his brave actions during battle, he was awarded a ‘Mention In Dispatches’.

Paul – Then I stood on the beach and watched Antelope blow up, then eventually sink. For me, that’s the reality of war. I talk to students these days in colleges and universities and I say, do you know there are not many people alive that have watched a warship sink? On the 25th of May, I stood on the beach with a lot of ships company from Antelope as well. You just watched their whole house, their belongings and everything just sink to the bottom of the sea.

It was spectacular and I mean that as descriptive. To watch the photographs, you see of those explosions going off midships of Antelope, was just unbelievable. What was unbelievable, was the heat and the noise of that burning melting metal going into the freezing South Atlantic. You just can’t describe it, you really can’t describe it. For me it’s like a silhouette. It’s all dark and then right in the middle is the ship with all the the explosion going on.

Gareth Timmins is a former Royal Marines Commando, turned author and behavioural scientist. While undertaking the world’s hardest basic training, Gareth was awarded the shooting medal, eventually representing the Royal Marines shooting team. After leaving The Royal Marines, Gareth’s book, ‘Becoming the 0.1%’, has become a best seller.

Gareth – It was almost like an anchor of stability and an extrinsic motivational factor for me to stay in. Imagine coming out of training after four or six weeks, without a diary. That would be an awful reminder of failure. I failed every run-through, partly because of my conduct on leave was just atrocious. I failed every run through and when it got to the day, there’s so many things that can go wrong. The worst thing about it mate is that as soon as you start th time’s on and you’re having a sense you haven’t got a lot of it. You could wrong foot and you could get caught on the sheep dip and you’re really up against it. You could fail and then you’ve got to get back. You’re flapping about the shoot, whether your weapon’s going to work

Royal Marines Commandos Cockleshell Endeavour, was four marines who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, honouring the Cockleshell Heroes. This mammoth task was done in support of the Royal Marines Charity, raising almost £50,000

W – We were always clipped onto the boat at all times whenever we were on deck, so when we were changing over, we’d always make sure we we’re clipping on to the the safety line. We’d obviously be wearing a life jacket or we had little climbing up harnesses which we took the leg loops out, so we’re just using the belt.

C – Ryan how are you brother?

R – Good buddy, how are you?

C – Yes, everyday is another day in paradise. I keep saying that several times a day I’m speaking to that many people! How have you been doing?

R – Not much really mate. Working, working and working.

C – I’m really conscious of our time and I want to get down to the nitty gritty because you and I had a little chat a few minutes ago. We’re brother Royal Marines. Obviously former marines because we’re all old now. I say that jokingly, I really honestly feel fourteen sometimes and I think I always have done. You’re down there in Australia and you’ve got a mental Instagram page on which you’re just completely honest about your past, your experiences good and bad and it really seems to be hitting the mark.

R – Yeah, I’ve been really lucky with it really I guess. There’s a big façade you can put up when you post stuff up on Instagram and I decided when I moved to Australia I was going to be real with everyone, and just say what was going on in my life and what’s happened throughout that process so maybe it can help another person or guy who is maybe in the same situation…

C – Ollie how are you brother?

O – I’m good mate, I’m really good, thanks for having me on.

C – Oh, I owe you a massive thanks, for several things. Not just the example you set, which is firing as I say. Also by doing myself and my girlfriend a massive favour by coming on the show. We have worked so hard now and you know you’ve walked that route yourself and taken action. You’ve been yourself, you’ve believed in your dream and if you don’t take action no one is going to do it for you. Forget the fear, take the action, but that doesn’t mean it’s not incredibly hard work. So the fact you’re helping me out Ollie by coming on for a chat, it’s massively appreciated and I know you are a busy man, with another book out.

O – Yeah it’s gone phenomenal but I just want to talk over that because you’ve hit the nail on the head there. A lot of people think by having a TV show and I’m sure we’ll talk about the TV show later. Especially the public points of view, they think it comes easy you know, they think motivation comes easy, they think it’s just a walk in the park, and that’s why both my books have been absolutely honest and also the reason the second book is called ‘Battle Ready’.

Agent Handler ‘Bernie’

Bernie was born in South London and joined the Royal Marines in 1973. During his twenty-four year military career, he served with 45, 40 and 41 Royal Marine Commandos, was attached to the Special Boat Service and also engaged in special duties in Northern Ireland. After his retirement from the Corps, Bernie joined the London Security ‘Circuit’ as a contractor and covered a variety of roles over a twenty year period, ranging from body-guarding an Arab Royal family to providing media security protection to news teams in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He has recently retired from working as a US DOD contractor teaching intelligence methods to the Iraqi and Afghan Army. He has started to write and uses this experience to enhance the realism of his books/scripts, penned under the name W.T.Delaney.

B – No it’s fine, I’m in Spain, in the lockdown of all lockdowns. It’s like being under the Stasi over here mate.

C – Bernie, I’m just going to say a few key words here which apparently work well for promoting our video when it goes on YouTube, that’s not actually the reason I do it but it helps the people at home to know what sort of thing we’re going to be talking about. So we’re going to be talking about the royal marines, unarmed combat, MI5, the intelligence services, the middle east and body guarding…
