He is a regular media commentator on security issues and appears on CNN International, BBC One, BBC World, BBC Radio and SKY News.

Transcript from ‘SAS Parachuting Into The South Atlantic’

B – So that was The Falklands and two years before that, we had The Iranian Embassy seige in London. I was on the top floor going in from the roof. It’s all part of being in a team. I had the job of lowering the explosives over the stairwell. If anybody watches the Iranian Embassy BBC clip on Youtube, there’s a big explosion and then there’s some journalists saying, ‘That was a bomb’. Then you then see the lads climbing out. You know, the four lads of the 30,000 that climbed out onto the balcony.

R – It’s a work of art and you know it has a limited audience, but I’m glad it’s out there.

C – You’re obviously very well read.  How did you get into writing and have you always been a reader?

R – I’ve always loved books. I love books more than television. I think being a soldier, I didn’t like the idea of going into the tv room and not being able to watch the program I wanted to because the other lads were watching Top of the Pops.

GO! GO! GO! SAS Iranian Embassy Siege Rusty Firmin

Rusty Firmin was Special Air Service (SAS) Blue Team and back door Assault Team Leader, at the Iranian Embassy Siege. He served in SAS B Squadron, HQ Squadron 23 SAS permanent staff instructor and in 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. He went on to work as a security consultant, close protection operative, security manager, author, speaker and consultant.

Transcript from ‘GO! GO! GO! SAS Iranian Embassy Siege’ podcast

C – All the preparations are in place. You’re running on adrenaline  and you’re about to put your life on the line for the very last time. Just as you’re going in, The BBC broadcast your secret to the  whole world.  What what was all that all about?

R – You know at the end of the day there’s no televisions inside the embassy that I’m aware of. That’s exactly what they would do. Don’t forget they’ve been sat outside there themselves from day one and cameras glued to the balcony front.

History Bro | The Falklands Conflict

I chat with one of the channel’s biggest supporters, History Bro, about the Falklands Conflict. Or was it a war? We discuss.

Transcript from ‘History Bro The Falklands Conflict’

C – History Bro how are you?

HB – Hi Mr Thrall it’s a pleasure to have a bit of your time, I really appreciate it. If we could talk about the Falklands a bit, is that what we’ve got on the docket today?

C –  You can see just by looking at your channel and for everybody watching I suggest you do, you’ve got a fairly in depth understanding of history, compared to someone like myself and I think we could talk forever, but shall we talk about the Falklands?

HB – Yeah, I would really like to, it’s one of things when I first got in touch with you that really sprung to mind, with of course your history with the Royal Marines. Just to put it in a bit of context I’d like to say early on that neither of us where there if anyone’s under any weird idea. |I wasn’t even one years old, I was born in 1981 and I hadn’t even had my first birthday when the action went down on the Falklands there. I imagine you were ten or twelve at the time, that sort of age but it’s part of your regimental history.

SAS Legend On The Fight For Goose Green

Nigel ‘Spud’ Ely’s soldiering career in the Parachute Regiment, the SAS, as a Military Consultant and as a War Photojournalist has taken him in to some of the most high-octane battles of the modern era. From Northern Ireland, the Falklands, to Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq, Spud has been in the thick of the most ferocious battles of modern times. He writes with passion, pace and the knowledge of someone who’s seen it and done it; because he has.

Transcript from ‘SAS Legend On The Fight For Goose Green’ podcast

Chris and Nigel

C – So Spud, is there something that makes people stay around Hereford after they’ve served.

N – Umm, no, well I love it. I’m a city boy and I’m a country boy, but I wouldn’t say there’s much to keep the lads around here. As a percentage I guess there’s very few of us who live here. Most of the guys move back home or overseas. I mean the camp is only five miles away from me as the crow flies, from my place. It’s nine miles away and I’m on the flight path to the Beacons, I get a lot of air traffic sometimes, but they don’t fly low enough for me. They always stay up high and I think they should get a bit of low level training!

C – So Spud, how old were you when you joined the parachute regiment, did you join the paras first?

FIRST Into Action | Duncan Falconer | #65

First into action is the story of Duncan Falconer who joined The Royal Marines and went on to passing selection with The Special Boat Service, based in Poole.

Prev 1 of 1 Next
Prev 1 of 1 Next

First Into Action

Duncan Falconer joined the British Royal Marines at the age of 18. At 19 years of age, he attended SBS selection in Poole Dorset and was one of nine Marines to successfully complete the course out of 147 men. Most candidates are required to serve some time in a Commando unit before applying, however Duncan was given an exception. Later he was posted to 42 Commando as a career broadening opportunity. Duncan served the majority of his military service with the SBS. During his time in the military, he also served with the SAS and 14 Intelligence Detachment, deployed to Northern Ireland with each for one year and two and a half years respectively. After he left the Detachment he took a sabbatical for a year before returning to the SBS where he was posted to MAT (“Maritime Anti-Terrorism”) operations in which he was involved in a number of exercises retaking oil rigs and tankers.

Transcript from ‘First Into Action’ podcast

Chris and Duncan

C – Duncan, how are you brother?

D – I’m well and can I say thank you very much for inviting me on your podcast.

C- The honour is all mine. You look like you’re on a life raft!

D – Yep, I’ve just paused the ocean for this podcast, but I’ll get it going again soon.

C – It’s quite appropriate for our marines background that you’re at sea.

D – Actually it’s the North Sea so yeah it’s very appropriate! …

Special Boat Service Royal Marines | Tony Hayes

Tony Hayes is a former Royal Marines Commando and member of the UK Special Forces, namely the SBS ( Special Boat Service ). He is now the founder of an innovative suspension training system, the SF1. In his teens Tony was subjected to a vicious assault when a gang stabbed him nine times and he was pronounced ‘DOA’ upon arrival at the hospital.

Chris and Tony

C – Tony, how are you brother?

T – Good, nice to meet you Chris.

C – Yes, you as well, it’s the joys of podcasting, I get to meet some amazing people. All of whom have been just wonderful individuals. Also it’s not bad getting paid to chat is it?

T – I can think of worse things, we’ve been in worse situations haven’t we?

C – Can you imagine they had podcasting back when we had to do guard duty! We could have knocked out loads! So, as I’ve said to you before, my fans love all things military. There’s loads we could just talk about on that alone, and as I’m rapidly learning there’s so many people that have suffered some form of trauma. I think it’s the nature of the society we’re in that seeks to frighten us all the time. It’s set up to put fear in us through the media, and we’ve got this culture that makes people feel bad about themselves through the beauty and health magazines. So I’m just figuring out that it seems everyone has suffered some form of trauma.

Transcript snippet from ‘Scuba Diving Accidents’ podcast.

Chris and Dennis

C – Hello Friends.

C – Dennis, how are you mate?

D – Very good Chris and yourself?

C-  Yes it’s amazing, no delightful to be talking to you in Australia, although I should have read your linked in profile better, as I didn’t realise you’re an Irishman down there.

D – Yes I thought the name would have given it away, the O’Connor part of it.

C – So I know the English sent our convicts down to Australia, was it the same for Ireland, or is my history really that bad?

D – No, your history is good, they did send them here. Some would say it’s the reason I’m here, but I’m denying everything!’

Scuba diving in Antarctica. Expedition 2013

The journey south …

As a polar explorer it’s not easy travelling south these days. Not like it was in the early part of the 20th century for the likes of Shackelton, Scott and Amundsen, whose sole preoccupation was sailing scott-free (unless you were Scott or traveling with him) on the open ocean with nothing to occupy their time but stroking huskies and fellow expedition members or surfing Facebook. No, these days you have to battle your way to the Polar Circle through a never-ending stream of frigid bergs hovering below the waterline ready to sink your chances of making Queen, Kate Middleton and Country proud … in the form of airport security, Immigration and KLM stewardesses.

DSC06200fb2
Cheers!

After spending 40 minutes at Heathrow having my hand luggage searched to check I wasn’t carrying more than my allotted allowance of Semtex, detonators and radical-extremist literature, I ran to the departure gate gutted that I had to forgo my pre-flight pint and the chance to spend time enjoying the truly authentic British pub atmosphere that only an airport departure lounge can offer.
