Nick Grainge is a highly successful athlete and veteran of 23 Special Air Service. In this podcast, Nick explains a little about continuation training within the reserve special-forces. Nick – To know that you’re okay, you need to be working hard and go on that hill with weight. You don’t go out and just wear a pair of boots, you should be running five hundred meters in a pair of boots or walking around with them and then do one mile. Then doing two miles, four miles and then ten miles. After a while you just do it, don’t you? It’s not about just lobbing straight in there.

If you break your training down very specifically and then start to put it all together, you start taxing your body and there is a lot of research that’s been done recently. One of the guys that’s part of it, got a quite high acclaimed award. One of them’s got a Nobel prize as well. There’s three elements within our bodies and systems that normally are relatively dormant. A lot of research has proven that if you can stimulate these responses, this fight or flight or this defense mechanism, these elements fire off and they they suggest at the moment that it can contribute to maybe fourteen extra years of life.
