Thomas Gast is a German author, video producer and former soldier. He is best known for his books on the French Foreign Legion and his YouTube channel ‘Thomas Gast’. Thomas has regularly published videos about the Foreign Legion, the Bundeswehr and survival since 2017. Chris chats with Thomas about his life and what led him to joining the French Foreign Legion. Thomas – I have taken a lot of good memories and good souvenirs. The romantic way of life is a soldier’s life you know? I’ve been two years in the French Foreign Legion and this is the jungle regiment in French Guyana. I chose the adventure and this was in the French Foreign Legion. I’ve been in deep jungle with crocodiles and marched through the bush with a big rock sargon on my back.

14 PEAKS The Nimsdai Story

Nimsdai was born in Nepal and like his father and brothers before, signed up to join the Gurkhas. Nims then passed selection for the UK’s special-forces and served another ten years with the Special Boat Service. After leaving the forces, Nims has gone on to become one of the world’s greatest mountaineers. He has accumulated an ever-growing list of record-breaking climbs and rescue missions. After one such mission, Nims was awarded an MBE for outstanding achievement in high-altitude mountaineering. His Netflix documentary, ’14 Peaks’, follows his attempt to summit all 14 of the world’s ‘Death Zone’ peaks in just seven months.

Nims – Thank you Chris. You know it’s a really humbling. Everything I do in life, I give one-hundred percent and writing this book was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I’m not sure if i’m going to write another book if i’m honest. When you write something, it becomes black and white, then it becomes concrete. To write this amount of an enormous book up to this stage, it’s kind my autobiography. I grew up in a very small humbling background with almost nothing. To joining The Gurkhas, failing on the first attempt and then making it happen. Then going into the special forces and serving with the elite forces for ten years.

Nick – I think the first step that people need to make is, just try and find out as much information as possible. There’s a lot of information out there nowadays. You mentioned on the last podcast, that this is an open book to a certain extent. Certainly with 23, there’s a lot of open source information out there and if you go to a recruiting office, you can kind of get a really good understanding of what kind of level of fitness you need to go through, to start that process. You can get quite good understanding.

Visualskies is an aerial focused technology company, who provide photographic and surveying services for heritage, construction, film and tv sectors. Visual Skies specialise in high definition 3D mapping, Virtual Reality environments, as well as aerial based time-lapse and photography services.

Joseph – Absolutely yes, this is definitely already happening. Virtual reality training already happens. Dropping a soldier into a virtual reality experience feels real when you have the headset on. When you take the headset off afterwards, you’re almost disappointed. It looks worse than the virtual reality world you’ve just been in, which is sort of scary. In as good a form as we can, we can preserve something right now. For Assassin’s Creed they had fully created a digital copy of Notre-Dame in Paris.
