Lieutenant Commander Paul Youngman MID, entered the Royal Navy in 1975 and passed the All Arms Commando Course. As a Royal Navy Medical Branch rating he served up to Warrant Officer First Class. During his 37 year career as a Royal Navy Commando, he served in many areas of operations including Northern Ireland, The Falklands War, Gulf War 1, Cambodia, Kosovo, Gulf War 2 and Afghanistan. Paul was a Leading Medical Assistant attached to 45 Commando Group, during the Falklands War. For his brave actions during battle, he was awarded a ‘Mention In Dispatches’.

Paul – Then I stood on the beach and watched Antelope blow up, then eventually sink. For me, that’s the reality of war. I talk to students these days in colleges and universities and I say, do you know there are not many people alive that have watched a warship sink? On the 25th of May, I stood on the beach with a lot of ships company from Antelope as well. You just watched their whole house, their belongings and everything just sink to the bottom of the sea.

It was spectacular and I mean that as descriptive. To watch the photographs, you see of those explosions going off midships of Antelope, was just unbelievable. What was unbelievable, was the heat and the noise of that burning melting metal going into the freezing South Atlantic. You just can’t describe it, you really can’t describe it. For me it’s like a silhouette. It’s all dark and then right in the middle is the ship with all the the explosion going on.
