Duncan – I think you know we have a very rational materialist kind of Cartesian model. They take things apart and look at all the bits, whereas in the indigenous world, they’re looking for the connections. You know what brings things together and how different systems integrate themselves and find harmony. You talked about the western model. A friend of mine, David Wendellberry, was out in the Americas before me in the early eighties. He worked with a a healer called Bear Heart. He says he was working with him and a woman turned out for a cancer healing.

The first thing he did was sit her on the floor in the desert and he drew a circle. He then drew a line through the circle and he says, now this is your job and this is mine. In our world, we just go and see a doctor and we expect the doctor to heal us without any kind of personal effort or self-reflection.
