Veterans’ Anger As Government Deny Suicide Rates, features former Royal Marines Commando, Jeff Williams. After a long service in the corps and as a Falklands veteran, Jeff finished his career as a Warrant Officer Class 2.

Jeff – One of our brothers took his life and I was just shocked. As you can probably remember from your service Chris, it was something that was never happened. All of a sudden, a royal marine has commited suicide. I was quite taken back by it, so I did a bit of backroom research. I found out it was more commonplace than I thought, especially in the aftermath of Afghanistan. The toil that that took out of our troops, across the board. I spoke to a few veteran friends and said, you know what’s going on and it seems like we’ve missed something here. There’s a key and it’s really important to the veterans community. On the back of that conversation, myself and Simon Marion started Veterans United Against Suicide.

It’s a group of like-minded people whom want the best for veterans. To try and reduce the losses which are astronomical. We challenge the government to get their viewpoint on it with any statistics that we could tap into. We don’t keep any statistics on veterans, only on the serving side. Once you leave the military, so many people will testify, you lose your identity somewhat. So many people have slipped through the net.

Jeff Williams of 42 Commando, tells the amazing story of how Mount Kent was secured, followed by the subsequent battle for Mount Harriet. He was a young corporal at the time of the Falklands War. Jeff served in 42 Commando’s HQ and finished his military career as a Warrant Officer Class 2. (WO2)

Jeff – I spoke to a lot of the guys about it and they all thought it was an April fool. We didn’t believe they could have done it but they had and so we’re all fired up then to go. We should point out here it wasn’t a surrender, it was a ceasefire. The governor said, you know there’s no point, so he ordered the guys to put their weapons down.

We traveled down to union and had a couple of days to get ready. I remember getting all the kit and and checking everything was right. I wasn’t supposed to go to the Falklands, but being irritating, I went up to the company commander and said, look I want to go. He said look you’re on a senior command course and that’s important in your life. I said I don’t care, I’ve got to go.
