Public enemy number one, features Jason Wilson, who is the son of a drug dealer once named public enemy number one, by British police.

Public Enemy Number ONE

Public enemy number one, features the story of Anthony Spencer. He was a successful business man and then he robbed his first bank. After many years in prison and a shoot-out in Amsterdam, Spencer was back behind bars. He was eventually freed after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. Jason’s book, ‘The Old Man and Me’, chronicles a childhood of dealing with such an infamous father.

Jason – So within the year we had all these businesses everywhere. He built slowly and he was just constantly expanding. Me and my brother would go to work with him on Saturdays and there’d be all these guys visiting him and calling by for advice. We’d go out in the car with him and meet people in pubs and in car parks. Sure enough he’s still a city villain but he’s mostly a businessman and straight.

Later on when I wrote the book, I’d meet one of the guys from CID. They became mates after he’d left the force and he used to visit my dad. He used to say to my dad, you need to knock this villainy on the head because you’ve got it made now.

Banged Up Abroad | Surviving Spain’s Toughest Jail

In 1997, English holidaymaker Terry Daniels, was wrongfully accused of smuggling a million pounds worth of cocaine from Brazil to Spain. Although Terry didn’t know it at the time, her companion had been paid by a judge and two police officers to transport the class A drugs. After being charged with drug trafficking, she was eventually granted bail but then suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage. Once she recovered, the Spanish authorities granted her the right to return to the UK. She assumed that her ordeal was over, but it had only just begun.

Chris – We should point out from the beginning that you were innocent. A lot of the banged up abroad just did it didn’t they? But in your case, you were not so much stitched up, but you were in bad company.

Terry – I think anything abroad is a different ball-game altogether. I’ve heard so many stories and to this day, there are stories coming out of people waiting eight years for sentencing.

C – Sammy, how are you brother?

S – I’m good Chris, how are you?

C – Yeah, I’m alright mate thank you, better every day to be honest.

S – Good. That’s what we like to hear.

C – It’s an absolute honour to finally get to meet, albeit through the pleasures of Zoom. I think Zoom is the bane of everybody’s life at the moment.

S – This is my second one, I don’t really know it from the point of view of using it, there we go that’s better.

C – I was trying to think, I had the absolute pleasure of driving to a podcast with Shaun Attwood or it might have been James English, and I was listening to your podcast. I’ve listened to both your podcasts with these guys on the way up in the car, and I was immediately struck Sammy not just with your massive experience as a prison officer but also the compassion that you showed throughout the interview to the people you were in charge of. It was rewarding to hear that there’s people like you out there. I think those of us that grew up with Porridge, you think of Strangeways prison and you think of was it Fulton McKay.

S – Yeah definitely

C – You know that rigid ex military type, and as I said it’s an honour to finally get to meet you…
