SAS Legend On The Fight For Goose Green

Nigel ‘Spud’ Ely’s soldiering career in the Parachute Regiment, the SAS, as a Military Consultant and as a War Photojournalist has taken him in to some of the most high-octane battles of the modern era. From Northern Ireland, the Falklands, to Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq, Spud has been in the thick of the most ferocious battles of modern times. He writes with passion, pace and the knowledge of someone who’s seen it and done it; because he has.

Chris and Nigel

C – So Spud, is there something that makes people stay around Hereford after they’ve served.

N – Umm, no, well I love it. I’m a city boy and I’m a country boy, but I wouldn’t say there’s much to keep the lads around here. As a percentage I guess there’s very few of us who live here. Most of the guys move back home or overseas. I mean the camp is only five miles away from me as the crow flies, from my place. It’s nine miles away and I’m on the flight path to the Beacons, I get a lot of air traffic sometimes, but they don’t fly low enough for me. They always stay up high and I think they should get a bit of low level training!

C – So Spud, how old were you when you joined the parachute regiment, did you join the paras first?
