C – I should just say that Mark Ryan is a big Hollywood star. He is also a former intelligence operative, which is quite relevant to the video that I’d made with John Hegan the other day. Mark has also starred in the film, ‘Who Dares Wins’ alongside Lewis Collins.

M – Lewis was a lad and a great character. He was the James Bond we never had.

During twenty years of service with 22 SAS Regiment, Bob participated in the Dhofar campaign, Oman, the Iranian Embassy siege in London, The Falklands War, the first Gulf War and Bosnia. He left the Regiment as a Warrant Officer and worked on the international security circuit as an adviser. Bob’s work in the private sector has taken him to the most volatile places on earth, including the Balkans, Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. He is a regular media commentator on security issues and appears on CNN International, BBC One, BBC World, BBC Radio and SKY News.

Transcript from ‘SAS Parachuting Into The South Atlantic’

Bob – So that was The Falklands and two years before that, we had The Iranian Embassy seige in London. I was on the top floor going in from the roof. It’s all part of being in a team. I had the job of lowering the explosives over the stairwell. If anybody watches the Iranian Embassy BBC clip on Youtube, there’s a big explosion and then there’s some journalists saying, ‘That was a bomb’. Then you then see the lads climbing out. You know, the four lads of the 30,000 that climbed out onto the balcony.

Serving Royal Marines Commandos David Bruce and Sam Edwards together with former Royal Marines and recovering veterans Junior Mcilhiney and Will Schweppes rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, honouring the Cockleshell Heroes, to support of the Royal Marines Charity and raising almost £50,000

Transcript from ‘Royal Marines Commandos Cockleshell Endeavour’

W – We were always clipped onto the boat at all times whenever we were on deck, so when we were changing over, we’d always make sure we we’re clipping on to the the safety line. We’d obviously be wearing a life jacket or we had little climbing up harnesses which we took the leg loops out, so we’re just using the belt.

Transcript from ‘SAS Trooper & Royal Marines Commando’ podcast

R – It’s a work of art and you know it has a limited audience, but I’m glad it’s out there.

C – You’re obviously very well read.  How did you get into writing and have you always been a reader?

R – I’ve always loved books. I love books more than television. I think being a soldier, I didn’t like the idea of going into the tv room and not being able to watch the program I wanted to because the other lads were watching Top of the Pops.

Executed In The Falklands

Brian Short joined the Royal Marines, not as a commando but as a bandsman. The Royal Marines Band is the finest military marching band in the world, but this doesn’t mean they don’t go to war. In this emotional podcast Brian tells his traumatic story, dealing with both Argentine and British casualties.

Transcript from ‘Executed In The Falklands’ podcast

B – I very much knew in my own mind at that time, that we were going to win this war. Not because what I or the band were doing, but when you saw the professionalism and the fitness of the marines and the paras, you were training every day on Canberra. We know what they go through at Lympstone. I had no doubt that whoever they were going up against, these boys were going to commit acts of gross violence against the enemy and they were going to win.

C – I’m just looking at your notes and I’m trying not to get ahead of ourselves Brian. So what was D-Day in San Carlos like?

GO! GO! GO! SAS Iranian Embassy Siege Rusty Firmin

Rusty Firmin was Special Air Service (SAS) Blue Team and back door Assault Team Leader, at the Iranian Embassy Siege. He served in SAS B Squadron, HQ Squadron 23 SAS permanent staff instructor and in 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. He went on to work as a security consultant, close protection operative, security manager, author, speaker and consultant.

Transcript from ‘GO! GO! GO! SAS Iranian Embassy Siege’ podcast

C – All the preparations are in place. You’re running on adrenaline  and you’re about to put your life on the line for the very last time. Just as you’re going in, The BBC broadcast your secret to the  whole world.  What what was all that all about?

R – You know at the end of the day there’s no televisions inside the embassy that I’m aware of. That’s exactly what they would do. Don’t forget they’ve been sat outside there themselves from day one and cameras glued to the balcony front.

History Bro | The Falklands Conflict

I chat with one of the channel’s biggest supporters, History Bro, about the Falklands Conflict. Or was it a war? We discuss.

Transcript from ‘History Bro The Falklands Conflict’

C – History Bro how are you?

HB – Hi Mr Thrall it’s a pleasure to have a bit of your time, I really appreciate it. If we could talk about the Falklands a bit, is that what we’ve got on the docket today?

C –  You can see just by looking at your channel and for everybody watching I suggest you do, you’ve got a fairly in depth understanding of history, compared to someone like myself and I think we could talk forever, but shall we talk about the Falklands?

HB – Yeah, I would really like to, it’s one of things when I first got in touch with you that really sprung to mind, with of course your history with the Royal Marines. Just to put it in a bit of context I’d like to say early on that neither of us where there if anyone’s under any weird idea. |I wasn’t even one years old, I was born in 1981 and I hadn’t even had my first birthday when the action went down on the Falklands there. I imagine you were ten or twelve at the time, that sort of age but it’s part of your regimental history.

The BBC film and docudrama, ‘Battle Of Danny Boy’ Brian Wood MC, features Brian Wood MC chatting with Chris Thrall. The soldier was falsely accused by disgraced lawyer, Phil Shiner, of war crimes during The Iraq war.  Shiner’s firm were behind 65% of the allegations received by IHAT.

BBC Film Danny Boy | Brian Wood MC

Brian Wood MC, former Colour Sergeant with The Princes of Wales Royal Regiment, was awarded the Military Cross. This is one of Britain’s highest awards for gallantry in combat, by Her Majesty The Queen II, following his courageous leadership under enemy fire in Iraq. In the heat of a lethal close quarters battle, fighting outnumbered, he seized the initiative, taking a split-second decision to lead his men into the teeth of enemy fire. This was the first bayonet charge by British soldiers in 25 years. Read Brian’s book ‘Double Crossed’ https://amzn.to/38cNQxQ

Danny Boy is now a BBC docudrama (documentary drama) film.

Transcript from ‘BBC Film Danny Boy | Brian Wood MC’ podcast

C – Brian, how are you brother?

B – Yeah I’m good thank you. Thanks for having me on, I appreciate it. We’ve been trying for a while now so it’s good to get on.

C – Yeah, we seem to be passing ships, like I am with a lot of my guests on social media. We’re out there doing our stuff, when we finally get together it’s all good huh?

B – Absolutely, absolutely.

C – I’m going to start by asking where do you get you drive from Brian. We’ll probably come on to talk about everything you’ve been through which is enough to tread down ten men, if not a hundred. You’re so busy all the time, you tend to get so much done, is there any philosophy we can learn from there.

B – Do you know what, I’m not the Oracle and I’ll never claim to be. I’m just driven by hard work.

SAS Legend On The Fight For Goose Green

Nigel ‘Spud’ Ely’s soldiering career in the Parachute Regiment, the SAS, as a Military Consultant and as a War Photojournalist has taken him in to some of the most high-octane battles of the modern era. From Northern Ireland, the Falklands, to Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq, Spud has been in the thick of the most ferocious battles of modern times. He writes with passion, pace and the knowledge of someone who’s seen it and done it; because he has.

Transcript from ‘SAS Legend On The Fight For Goose Green’ podcast

Chris and Nigel

C – So Spud, is there something that makes people stay around Hereford after they’ve served.

N – Umm, no, well I love it. I’m a city boy and I’m a country boy, but I wouldn’t say there’s much to keep the lads around here. As a percentage I guess there’s very few of us who live here. Most of the guys move back home or overseas. I mean the camp is only five miles away from me as the crow flies, from my place. It’s nine miles away and I’m on the flight path to the Beacons, I get a lot of air traffic sometimes, but they don’t fly low enough for me. They always stay up high and I think they should get a bit of low level training!

C – So Spud, how old were you when you joined the parachute regiment, did you join the paras first?

The Untold Story Of 45 Commando

Andy served both in the ranks and as an officer from 1976 to 1996 in the Royal Marines. He passed out of training as the top recruit (King’s Badgeman, 98 Troop) and as the best Young Officer (Royal Marines Sword of Honour Young Officer Batch May 80) and was awarded a General Officer Commanding’s Commendation for his field work in Northern Ireland (40 Commando Royal Marines). At the height of the ground fighting in the 1982 Falklands islands conflict, he was a rifle troop commander in charge of 32 men, and was tasked with operating independently from his unit, 45 Commando Royal Marines, in no man’s land. During this phase, whilst conducting a fighting patrol to destroy some of the enemy’s fire support systems, he ambushed what he thought was an enemy force killing four men. It transpired that it was a friendly patrol from his own unit.

This single event, coupled with five tours in Northern Ireland, changed his perception of himself and gradually life in general, and was the beginning of a long slide towards ultimate despair, and eventually contemplation of suicide. From 1982 until 1996 he managed to continue functioning in various command capacities within the Royal Marines, but at the same time was aware of a growing split between the rational external face and the lurking internal horror that was slowly engulfing his entire persona.

Eventually his marriage collapsed and the loss of his family, two daughters, and all possessions, triggered off the reactions that are now known to be classical symptoms of PTSD. In 1989 the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was unknown to Andy and by 1996 he finally accepted that he had to leave the Corps and country he loved in order to deal with this overwhelming problem. He bought an old classic yacht and with his new wife, Cheralie, sailed off into the North Atlantic to re-discover himself.

In the late summer of 1997 they discovered the beautiful sub-tropical Balearic island of Formentera and dropped anchor. It was here that Andy began the process of self-healing. On the 6th of September 2012, by invitation of the Commanding Officer, who was an old friend, Andy gave a two hour presentation to 45 Commando Royal Marines on his war and its effects. Not only did he manage this with no emotional fall-out, but that night he found himself listening to a number of serving officers who wanted to talk about their experiences and resultant emotional problems. Andy realised that this was the end of his 30-year battle with PTSD; and the beginning of a new career in mentoring those who are suffering today. Thus The Mountain Way was born.

Chris and Andy

C – Andy, how are you brother?

A – Very pleasantly warm thank you very much!

C – Yes, in Ibiza.

A – Yes my home, I don’t like to say that, but I do say it too often. I suppose it could be called showing off but I’m not a party animal. You know I’ve only ever been in one of these nightclubs once and that was to blow up 5000 balloons. I was working for 10 Euros an hour then!

C – Yeah, they certainly have got some thumping nightclubs over there from what I remember, but from what I remember from my one trip to the Island is they’re blooming expensive.
