John Bosley is a former Sapper in the Royal Engineers. Unlike his father & brothers, who all joined the Parachute Regiment, John initially went for training with the Royal Marines. Thelma Bosley & six other people, were killed at Aldershot Barracks in 1972.

John – One of my brothers was very vocal in trying to get it addressed. It really rankered him over a long period. The Bloody Sunday inquiry went on over 12 years. The Northern Ireland troubles go back way longer than we acknowledge. It goes back to 800 years or so. The recent period of trouble started in the late sixties.

There was tensions between the Protestant loyalist Community and the Catholics. The Catholics were in favour of Northern Ireland becoming part of southern Ireland and being reunited into one country. Initially the British government deployed security there to protect the Catholics from attacks from the Protestants.

Dave – The house they put me in was right across from the secret police headquarters. They did that deliberately to try and intimidate people. At that time there was a massive drug problem with Escobar. What he was doing was, was flying aircraft from both Colombia and Venezuela and the planes were dropping drugs off the keys or they were Landing in Lakeland in Florida.

A lot of the aircraft didn’t have the range at the time, so they were landing on South Caicos, which was the next Island dock from Grand Turk. The prime minister of Caicos was actually getting money from Escobar for allowing these aircraft to land. So what happened was a guy called Barry Seal, he was an ex-green Beret and he’d been caught by the DEA for flying drugs in and out of Nicaragua. He was told that he had to work with the D.A or else he was going to go to prison.

Stuart – Back in 1983 I was learning the Alto-sax and they said, we’ll have you in the band. I said, just like that? He says yes, because you’ve got your parachute wings. When you join the regimental band, you don’t do P-company. You do four weeks basic training and then you go to the academy. I already saw problems just through serving alcohol to these senior nco’s. This world as a paratrooper in 3 Para, was going to be problematic. So I went and had an interview with a band master and he said, have a go on the tenor. I was good on the Alto and baritone. The baritone’s massive and he could probably thought we’ll get him on that because it weighs a ton.

So I went to have a few beers in the NAFI bar in Palace barracks. Then I met this guy from Grimsby from B-Company. I told him I’d just been accepted to join the regimental band and he says, you don’t want to do that. You want to join ‘battling B’, Gypsy platoon, do you know what I mean? Then he started listing who was in the company and there was all these kind of like celebrities from the Para’s TV series. Sergeant Riley, who is now a sergeant major Riley, although they called him Mavis Riley. That was his nick-name.

Whilst trying to secure free passage for British citizens in Afghanistan, he was taken for questioning by The Taliban and held for six months. Here is an exclusive update on events.

Anthony – I’ve decided to go public with this investigation for one objective, is to and draw a light on what’s actually happened in Afghanistan. Obviously the Taliban is an umbrella organization with a lot of tribal elements and people who fall under that. The person in question has been ill-treating and beating British nationals and a very large number of Afghan-British dual nationals.

There are over 700 British passport holders in Afghanistan, who are stuck there. There are also hundreds of N.G.O.’s operating there. Ahmed Zaire is trolling and searching through social media networks to identify former British and American Service Personnel.

Anthony – The problem any country is going to have, is who’s going to want to invest in a country where it’s not stable. The security situation is deteriorating, the economy is deteriorating as well. The Taliban were telling the Chinese that everything has been okay. The Chinese promised a large amount of money which was hundreds of millions, to be given to The Taliban. A small amount has changed hands but a lot of it has not.

Everyone’s just pulling back the actual reins and watching what happens. There isn’t just the Chinese who are interested in the natural resources in Afghanistan. You’ve got the Americans, the British and other European countries all trying to talk to the taliban.

Nigel – We had 20 odd prisoners but the heavy arms firing hadn’t died down they were still mortaring Darwin hill. They were still mortaring our positions eith artillery and then they flew in special forces in Huey’s and a couple of Chinooks. Then with these prisoners, these two Pakaras came around and didn’t attack. They came back again about 10 minutes later and they one of them dropped Napalm! They dropped a Napalm bomb and it actually dropped about 20 meters from me, well I’d say about 15 meters from me.

The momentum went away from me and missed the prisoners, but it singed me and it singed a couple of the other guys, so that’s how close it was. That combined with John Knox telling the Argies where we were, just made us enraged. What the hell are they doing dropping Napalm? This is fucking crazy you know, it’s outlawed.

Stuart – I was waiting to go to Somalia with Vice and then that changed. We were then going to go to Nigeria. I had about 500 pounds worth of inoculations in my arm from this Harley street clinic. Going nowhere, so I wrote this radio play called, ‘Pig’s Disco’. It sort of started because 1990 was a really full-on year. A lot of stuff happened and then we were on Christmas party guard duty at the palace. Anyway one of the senior guys from from the platoon was going, have you ever tried any acid?

Falklands War 40th Anniversary features veterans from the army, navy and marines, who fought to retake the British Islands.

The Falklands War was instigated on April 2nd 1982, when General Galtieri’s Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. 68 Royal Marines who were newly stationed on the islands, fought a determined battle against overwhelming Argentine forces. With little options available, Governor Rex Hunt implimented a ceasefire, asking the Royal Marines to stand-down. Unfortunately for the Argentine forces, Margaret Thatcher’s government was intent on retaking British territory back. Her government quickly set about sending a taskforce over 8000 miles, to take back the islands. In this Falklands 40th anniversary podcast, we hear from the troops who won the battles. Their actions ultimately led to Galtieri’s dictatorship coming to an end.

Ricky – There were not quite 70 of us today and when we come back, we’re bringing the whole corps and there’ll be seven thousand of us. He said, you should have seen him, the guy was crying.

Andy – The company commander had called us in and he told us about the battle of Goose Green. That was the 28th of May. That was the day Colonel Jones was killed with 17 others of his battalion. I was in the first land battle and up to that point, we had no idea it was happening. My mother in Wales knew more about the Falklands war than I did and it came as a complete surprise to discover a battalion attack had been put in. It was a very gutsy thing to do and I’ve got great respect for the paras who were massively outnumbered with none of the support they expected.

To hear their C.O. had been killed along with everybody else was a real shock. The BBC world service told the world, including the enemy that we were about to attack. Colonel Jones said to his own group that he was going to sue the bastards when he got back and obviously he didn’t.
