Nigel ‘Spud’ Ely’s soldiering career in the Parachute Regiment, the SAS, as a Military Consultant and as a War Photojournalist has taken him in to some of the most high-octane battles of the modern era. From Northern Ireland, the Falklands, to Africa, Afghanistan and Iraq, Spud has been in the thick of the most ferocious battles of modern times. C – So Spud, is there something that makes people stay around Hereford after they’ve served.

N – Umm, no, well I love it. I’m a city boy and I’m a country boy, but I wouldn’t say there’s much to keep the lads around here. As a percentage I guess there’s very few of us who live here. Most of the guys move back home or overseas. I mean the camp is only five miles away from me as the crow flies, from my place. It’s nine miles away and I’m on the flight path to the Beacons, I get a lot of air traffic sometimes, but they don’t fly low enough for me. They always stay up high and I think they should get a bit of low level training!

C – So Spud, how old were you when you joined the parachute regiment, did you join the paras first?
