Steven Blades Coronation Street | Marines #58

Steven Blades was a serving Royal Marines Commando who has served in Afghanistan, then fought on Coronation Street. After surving a tour of Afghanistan and then losing an eye in a savage street fight, former Royal Marines Commando Steven Blades overcame PTSD to embark on a successful acting career, landing a role in Vikings. Steven has also made numerous other television appearances, most notably in Coronation Street and he’s now starring in ‘Sunray’ , which has been created by Royal Marines Commandos.

S – Hello mate, I’m all good, how are you?

C – I’m fantastic mate, I’m absolutely delighted to be talking to you. It’s very kind you’ve come on pretty short notice. I came across your profile on Facebook or was it Instagram.

S – Yeah we’ve been connected on Facebook for quite a bit, I’ve been seeing your stuff for quite some time as well.

C – Yeah bad luck! It’s really interesting I’ve just been chatting to a fascinating guy called Ryan the holistic health coach. He’s ex marine and he’s down there in Australia. We were just saying about the Instagram thing, the whole approach to it is really interesting. He’s taking the approach I’m starting to take, which is just to be honest on Instagram. It seems to really resonate with young people now.

S – Yeah, I think that’s the best way to be on social media, I just try to be as honest as possible, but it’s a big market now especially with businesses and companies collaborating with people…

R – I’m doing really good thanks mate. 10’000 subscribers.

C – 12’000 now, thank you to all these subscribers or friends as I prefer. I hate that commodity thing. You look like you’re in the library mate, what’s going on there.

R – Well last time you joined me, I was in the wardrobe, and tonight it’s much later in the evening in Los Angeles and I’d thought I’d go and get a comfortable chair, because last time I spoke to you the chair wasn’t that comfortable. And if we’re going to have a heart to heart or a tete a tete, then I need to be in daddy’s chair and I’m in daddy’s chair right now. That’s where I am.

C – Have you got a big house over there mate? How does that work?

R -It works like this. You go on tour, you make some money, you think about where you’re going to put that money. Then you get scared of losing that money, so you think, what’s the best thing to do with it. Then you think I’ll put it into bricks and mortar because if everything crashes and everything goes away at least you’ll be left with bricks and mortar and a viable actual thing! So I put my money into a house…

Jason Bowen is a former Special Forces Signaller who now runs ‘The S.F. Experience’. The S.F. Experience is staffed by former elite operators from the SAS, SBS and SFSG to give members of the public a taste of the hardest military selection course in the world.

J – I’m all good thanks Chris, it’s a pleasure and a privilege to chat to you mate.

C – Who’s got the best backdrop, that’s the question.

J – It does look a little bit corporate doesn’t it.

C – I’ve been told about what you’re doing and that’s obviously part of what we’re going to talk about, it sounds amazing.

J – Thanks yeah.

C – I’m all up for giving people the military experience without sending them to war. I’m all for peace these days in my old age. But yes incredible. So what is the SF experience?

J – Well it started off back in 2013. Tragically three guys died in the Brecon Beacons on SAS reserve selection. There was a lot of news coverage at the time and it got quite political.

One of the guys fathers, I knew him briefly and I felt sorry for the parents because all this political stuff was going on in the press and the media. There was little compassion for

the parents and I felt like I wanted to do something for them.

FIRST Into Action | Duncan Falconer | #65

First into action is the story of Duncan Falconer who joined The Royal Marines and went on to passing selection with The Special Boat Service, based in Poole.

First Into Action

Duncan Falconer joined the British Royal Marines at the age of 18. At 19 years of age, he attended SBS selection in Poole Dorset and was one of nine Marines to successfully complete the course out of 147 men. Most candidates are required to serve some time in a Commando unit before applying, however Duncan was given an exception. Later he was posted to 42 Commando as a career broadening opportunity. Duncan served the majority of his military service with the SBS. During his time in the military, he also served with the SAS and 14 Intelligence Detachment, deployed to Northern Ireland with each for one year and two and a half years respectively. After he left the Detachment he took a sabbatical for a year before returning to the SBS where he was posted to MAT (“Maritime Anti-Terrorism”) operations in which he was involved in a number of exercises retaking oil rigs and tankers.

CC – Hello mate, very well. Thank you for having me on the podcast, I’m a big fan of your show Chris.

C – Ahh that’s an absolute honour mate, I’m not always good at taking compliments, because I just do stuff.

CC – A lot of high achievers are the same, can’t take a compliment.

C – Yeah, what I do know is I have love and respect so thank you for saying that. This podcast and a lot of content creators will tell you this, and you are one yourself. You’ve certainly been in the media a lot in your history Chris, but anyone will tell you it all starts with a first move. An idea, a dream, that you put into action. I didn’t have to start to talking into that webcam, well not that webcam, that’s an expensive one and I started on the one that comes with your PC. Yes it all starts with an idea, you start talking into that web camera, when it’s not breaking down like it just did! When people start to respond and say ‘Chris I really like that video, I guess it’s a bit of a wow moment.

C – I was going to say how are you Tim, and now I’m going to say how are you colours?

T – I’m great thanks.

C – Is that the same in the army, we call our colour sergeants, colours and that’s an acceptable thing to call them.

T – No, in the army it’s called colour, without the letter ‘s’ on the end. It’s quite funny because I worked with the marines quite a bit. I did three deployments with three commando brigade and they were all calling me colours. When I moved into London, they all called me Sir. Then I had an opportunity to go back and work with my regiment and they were calling me colour, so it was quite bizarre the way I was being treated with the different regiments.

Mick Dawson is a former Royal Marines Commando, film maker, professional sailor and adventurer. He is best known for rowing the Pacific Ocean with friend and fellow ocean rower Chris Martin in a new state of the art vessel, Bojangles, which Mick built. In 2009, they completed their 7,000 mi (11,000 km) voyage in 189 days 10 hours and 55 minutes; a world first and earning a place in the Guinness Book of records. His tale of being capsized alone while rowing the Pacific is one you don’t want to miss!
