Man DOWN! | Afghanistan | Falklands | Northern Ireland | Podcast | #189

Man down! features Chris Thrall chatting with fellow veteran Royal Marines, regarding their experiences in conflict and PTSD.

Man DOWN! | Afghanistan | Falklands | Northern Ireland | Podcast | #189

Former Royal Marine Corporal Ric Coulson served on multiple operational tours including Afghanistan, Iraq and Sierra Leone. Ric witnessed the savage, brutal nature of war fighting and he took part in close-quarter battle. Former Royal Marines Major, Andy Shaw, is a King’s Badgeman and Sword of Honour recipient. Andy experienced the utter horror of combat in the Falklands Conflict. What these two men don’t know about war, isn’t worth listening to. What they do know about its effects, is this.

Transcript from ‘Man DOWN!’ podcast

Andy – The war fighting wasn’t anything like what Ric has been through. The two main events that my organization went through, included an ambush that went badly wrong. It was a fighting patrol that was meant to go and destroy some enemy positions. We had a thing called a, ‘blue on blue’. That resulted in four fatalities and three men very seriously injured.

C – Jamesy, how are you brother?

J – I’m very well, how are you brother?

C – Sensational mate, know what I’m saying. Trying to work it all out you know.

J – Well, we’ll be doing that to the day we die, you’re doing amazing brother. I’m really proud of you.

C- Oh well you know that’s a two way thing James. For people watching at home, James very kindly gave me a start on his podcast and through that Shaun Attwood. That’s a good few months ago now. Oh and what do they say, don’t work with children and animals? They need to add IPhones too that too. James you are just a lovely genuine man, you’ve clearly got self respect and a huge amount of respect for your guests. It’s people like you that are pushing my world and the world for my little boy in the right direction and that really needs to be acknowledged.

Chris and Stephen

C – Stevie, how are you brother?

S – I’m good, very good Chris yes.

C – Thank you so much for joining me on the Bought The Tee Shirt podcast mate, and my gosh, your life reads like the pages out of Goodfellas or something.

S – Well the one thing you can’t call it is boring! I believe we’ve all got a story in us, we’ve all lived a life, and it’s about overcoming things and improving as human beings.

C – Yes, exactly, we’re all starting to get there aren’t we… Well some of us are! Can we talk about your childhood, my old stomping ground. It was Belfast wasn’t it?

S – Belfast yep.

C – Yeah I recognised some of the places out of your book. Now you didn’t grow up with a religion there? You moved over as a child?

S – I was born here Chris, I was taken over there as a six month old child, I had no recollection as to going back…

One Year NO Beer | Former Professional Footballer

Join former professional footballer Andy Ramage and I as we discuss the benefits of going alcohol free for either 30, 90 or 365 days with the One Year No Beer project.

Transcript snippet from ‘One Year NO Beer | Former Professional Footballer’ podcast

Chris and Andy

C – Andy, how are you my friend?

A – It’s hot and I’m tip top.

C – It’s funny, when you came onto the Zoom meeting before we went live and I heard you say “Hi there, how you doing”. It’s weird as I hear you say that most mornings from your inspirational morning talks. I set my Facebook t0 have the one year no beer post showing first, so you don’t get that dose of negativity as you first wake up!  For our friends at home, it’s Andy running through the forest talking about the benefits of not drinking alcohol in your life. That doesn’t mean give it up forever but for at least a particular period in life. It’s not about being a monk or something to that extreme. So from myself mate, thank you so much for those.

A – It’s my favourite part of the day Chris, just being out there in the wild and connecting with so many different people, with the truth being told, I didn’t actually think that would be a big part of what I would be doing.

Chris and Dennis

C – Hello Friends.

C – Dennis, how are you mate?

D – Very good Chris and yourself?

C-  Yes it’s amazing, no delightful to be talking to you in Australia, although I should have read your linked in profile better, as I didn’t realise you’re an Irishman down there.

D – Yes I thought the name would have given it away, the O’Connor part of it.

C – So I know the English sent our convicts down to Australia, was it the same for Ireland, or is my history really that bad?

D – No, your history is good, they did send them here. Some would say it’s the reason I’m here, but I’m denying everything!’

A Review of ‘My Secret Life: A Memoir of Bulimia’ by Leanne Waters

“But let’s not get ahead of ourselves now …”

– a review of My Secret Life: A Memoir of Bulimia by Leanne Waters

I found this book to be exceptional, for so many reasons it’s hard to articulate in this short piece.

Leanne’s writing style is up there with the best, descriptive, articulate and richly metaphorical; the recall of her experience so detailed – as only the memory of someone who has been through extreme trauma can be.

Leanne takes you through the phases of bulimia, from the socio-psychological foundations of this condition – for example, the bullying at school – to the ‘fasting’, ‘binging’, ‘purging’ and ‘recovery’ that then plays out – each stage intricately narrated for the readers understanding and at the respective pace.

You find yourself so in-tune with Leanne’s story and so fond of her personality that you wonder how in our society this self-denunciation could be allowed to happen, or to go unseen – particularly brought home as Leanne details hiding her bulimia from all those around her

My favourite line is the book is “But let’s not get ahead of ourselves now” and the most touching part for me is when her friends stand fast to support her recovery.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is invented. The Girl with the Eating Disorder is real life. Take your pick … I know which book added more to my life …
