Transcript snippet from podcast

Chris and Ryan

C – Ryan how are you brother?

R – Good buddy, how are you?

C – Yes, everyday is another day in paradise. I keep saying that several times a day I’m speaking to that many people! How have you been doing?

R – Not much really mate. Working, working and working.

C – I’m really conscious of our time and I want to get down to the nitty gritty because you and I had a little chat a few minutes ago. We’re brother Royal Marines. Obviously former marines because we’re all old now. I say that jokingly, I really honestly feel fourteen sometimes and I think I always have done. You’re down there in Australia and you’ve got a mental Instagram page on which you’re just completely honest about your past, your experiences good and bad and it really seems to be hitting the mark.

R – Yeah, I’ve been really lucky with it really I guess. There’s a big façade you can put up when you post stuff up on Instagram and I decided when I moved to Australia I was going to be real with everyone, and just say what was going on in my life and what’s happened throughout that process so maybe it can help another person or guy who is maybe in the same situation…

#55 Hollywood Celebrity Bodyguard | Jack English | Royal Marines Commando | Afghanistan

Before becoming a Hollywood bodyguard to the stars, Jack English served as a Royal Marines Commando in Afghanistan.

Transcript snippet from podcast

Chris and Jack

C – Jack, how are you brother?

J – Morning Chris, how you doing?

C – I’m doing phenomenal mate. I was thinking I need to come up with a new word because phenomenal isn’t good enough now! I was thinking phenmeganomical is that a word?

J – Go for it, just make it up. Brand it, that can be yours.

C – Don’t they say if a word appears more than three times in the media it goes into the English dictionary.

J – Something like that yeah!

C – I’m just going to say some keywords here because apparently YouTube they pick up on the first things you talk about. So we’re going to say Royal Marines, Afghanistan, bodyguard and life coach. It doesn’t really bother me but I thought I’d give it a go and see if we got a higher rating on YouTube. So how’s life with you mate?

J – Life’s good mate, life’s good. Quite interestingly enough we’re in the Covid 19 lockdown terms in the current climate. I find myself to be enjoying it to be perfectly honest. I usually live a very busy, here, there and everywhere kind of life, which I thoroughly enjoy, don’t get me wrong. I choose it, I love it. I usually get bored being in the same place for too long…

Chris and Jason

C – Jason how you doing mate?

J – I’m all good thanks Chris, it’s a pleasure and a privilege to chat to you mate.

C – Who’s got the best backdrop, that’s the question.

J – It does look a little bit corporate doesn’t it.

C – I’ve been told about what you’re doing and that’s obviously part of what we’re going to talk about, it sounds amazing.

J – Thanks yeah.

C – I’m all up for giving people the military experience without sending them to war. I’m all for peace these days in my old age. But yeah incredible. So yes what is the SF experience.

J – Well it started off back in 2013. Tragically three guys died in the Brecon Beacons on SAS reserve selection. There was a lot of news coverage at the time, it got quite political. One of the guys fathers, I knew him briefly and I felt sorry for the parents because all this political stuff was going on in the press and the media, and there was little compassion for the parents, and I felt like I wanted to do something for them…

Prev 1 of 1 Next
Prev 1 of 1 Next

Steve Mathews fought with 1 Para in Iraq and went onto serve with the Special Forces Support Group. Steve explains all about the airborne brigade, the death of the military policeman at at Majar al-Kabir, how 1 Para almost jumped into battle, how the parachute course is run and his current work as a civilian security contractor in Iraq. We discuss the parachute course at Brize Norton including the skyvan and the old balloon jump, and what it like to work alongside the Special Air Force (SAS) and Special Boat Service (SBS) and training, tactics and weapons.

Chris and Steve

C – Steve how are you brother?

S – I’m good thank you how are you?

C – I’m very well mate, thank you for asking. You’re in Iraq as we speak?

S – Yeah, currently on lockdown in Baghdad, Iraq yeah.

C – What position are you holding in there?

S – I’m basically working for a private security company. Part of the regional management team. So we basically oversee all the projects in our region and provide support for those projects.

C – If we go back to the beginning, it was 1 Para you were in?

S – Yeah, so I left school in the year 2000, always wanted to join the military, I had three other family members in the parachute regiment at the time, so my allegiance was to the parachute regiment. I was too young to join as an adult entry, so my only option was to go to the army foundation college in Harrogate…

Prev 1 of 1 Next

Regimental Sergeant Major Baz Gray served with the Royal Marines’ elite Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre as both a mountain leader (ML) and course instructor. A trained sniper, Baz has served on operations in several conflicts, including Afghanistan, and in recent years has skied solo and unsupported to the South Pole in Antarctica. Tomorrow Baz will attempt to run EIGHTY MILES NONSTOP to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the formation of the COMMANDOS and raise funds for the Royal Marines Charity (links below). This podcast features a cameo by Jason ‘Foxy’ Fox Special Boat Service (SBS) from the TV series SAS Who Dares Wins

C – Baz how are you brother?

B – Really well Chris, great to see you. I haven’t seen you in quite a while with the stuff going on, so it’s great to see your face mate.

C – Yes mate, and yours too. How are you feeling about tomorrow.

B – I’m ready, I’m a bit like you mate, I sort of decided to do this quite late, but fortunately I look after myself and do quite a lot of running anyway. My escape tends to be out on the moors near where I live, so I’ve really knuckled down and focused on doing this run in the last couple of weeks properly. It’s probably not the sort of time you should be giving yourself into an eighty mile run but…

#75 Arctic Warfare Training | AWT | Life In A Royal Marines Commando Unit | Norway | Chris Thrall

Prev 1 of 1 Next
Prev 1 of 1 Next

Ever wondered what it is like to fight in the Norwegian Arctic, carrying an eighty pound bergen on a pair of skis, jumping into ice-cold water and sleeping in a snowcave? In this podcast I talk about my arctic warfare training in Norway (AWT) in the first year of a Royal Marines Commando Unit.

Transcript snippet from podcast

Chris

C – Hello friends, I hope this finds you well. Welcome back to another in my what’s the royal marines really like series. I’ve been really looking forward to doing this for quite some time now, because I’m going to talk about Norway, which looking back at least was an experience I was so glad I went through, if maybe I wasn’t so happy at the time for reasons I’ll explain. So Norway is where the Royal Marines do their Arctic Warfare training. I first sort of came across the Norway experience as opposed to just hearing about it when I was on rear party at 42 Commando. So I left for training in February, bitterly cold when we did our commando tests and I went to 42 Commando which is at Bickley, just outside Plymouth, and I was on something called rear party which is basically guard duty. The reason being the whole unit were away on winter deployment or exercise and this was of course in Norway where 42 and 45 commando go every year, at least that’s how it was when I served…

C – Richard, how are you mate?

R – Yeah good thanks Chris mate, thanks for having me on.

C – No, it’s an absolute pleasure. I was a bit thrown because I went to your website and the last time I went there it was Team Rubicon, and now it’s Operation React, and for these ageing braincells it threw me a little bit! So that’s to do with our cousins across the water is it?

R – Yeah Team Rubicon UK was a franchise of something that started in the States a few years ago. In America they’ve got a huge organisation, very capable but it does a different thing to what we do here, it’s just time to rebrand  the brand around what we do here around our British values, how we operate around the world and to show we’re now an English or United Kingdom operation, that’s why we’re now RE:ACT …

C – James, how are you Sir?

J – Good thanks Sir, always good to speak to a fellow bootneck, and finding out another one of us has made it onto the online and media industry.

C – A meagre foray I think you could say but it’s all exciting stuff. I have to say I’m really honoured James, I really am, for so many reasons, least of which is the work you’re doing to protect wildlife. I was just watching one of your videos there with the lions. I’ve lived in China and the odds are stacked against these beautiful creatures…

#96 The Untold Story Of 45 Commando In The Falklands | Major Andy Shaw | Royal Marines | Kings Badgeman

Prev 1 of 1 Next
Prev 1 of 1 Next

Andy served both in the ranks and as an officer from 1976 to 1996 in the Royal Marines. He passed out of training as the top recruit (King’s Badgeman, 98 Troop) and as the best Young Officer (Royal Marines Sword of Honour Young Officer Batch May 80) and was awarded a General Officer Commanding’s Commendation for his field work in Northern Ireland (40 Commando Royal Marines). At the height of the ground fighting in the 1982 Falklands islands conflict, he was a rifle troop commander in charge of 32 men, and was tasked with operating independently from his unit, 45 Commando Royal Marines, in no man’s land. During this phase, whilst conducting a fighting patrol to destroy some of the enemy’s fire support systems, he ambushed what he thought was an enemy force killing four men. It transpired that it was a friendly patrol from his own unit. This single event, coupled with five tours in Northern Ireland, changed his perception of himself and gradually life in general, and was the beginning of a long slide towards ultimate despair, and eventually contemplation of suicide. From 1982 until 1996 he managed to continue functioning in various command capacities within the Royal Marines, but at the same time was aware of a growing split between the rational external face and the lurking internal horror that was slowly engulfing his entire persona. Eventually his marriage collapsed and the loss of his family, two daughters, and all possessions, triggered off the reactions that are now known to be classical symptoms of PTSD. In 1989 the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was unknown to Andy and by 1996 he finally accepted that he had to leave the Corps and country he loved in order to deal with this overwhelming problem. He bought an old classic yacht and with his new wife, Cheralie, sailed off into the North Atlantic to re-discover himself. In the late summer of 1997 they discovered the beautiful sub-tropical Balearic island of Formentera and dropped anchor. It was here that Andy began the process of self-healing. On the 6th of September 2012, by invitation of the Commanding Officer, who was an old friend, Andy gave a two hour presentation to 45 Commando Royal Marines on his war and its effects. Not only did he manage this with no emotional fall-out, but that night he found himself listening to a number of serving officers who wanted to talk about their experiences and resultant emotional problems. Andy realised that this was the end of his 30-year battle with PTSD; and the beginning of a new career in mentoring those who are suffering today. Thus The Mountain Way was born.

C – Andy, how are you brother?

A – Very pleasantly warm thank you very much!

C – Yes, in Ibiza.

A – Yes my home, I don’t like to say that, but I do say it too often. I suppose it could be called showing off but I’m not a party animal. You know I’ve only ever been in one of these nightclubs once and that was to blow up 5000 balloons. I was working for 10 Euros an hour then!

C – Yeah, they certainly have got some thumping nightclubs over there from what I remember, but from what I remember from my one trip to the Island is they’re blooming expensive…

Simon Weston CBE is a veteran of the British Army who is known for his charity work and recovery from severe burn injuries suffered during the Falklands War. On 8 June 1982 he was boarded with other members of his regiment on RFA Sir Galahad in Port Pleasant near Fitzroy, just off the Falkland Islands. It was hit and set on fire by the Argentine Skyhawk fighters during the Bluff Cove Air Attacks. His ship was carrying a huge amount of ordinance and thousands of gallons of diesel and petrol. Out of his platoon of 30 men, 22 lost their lives. The Welsh Guards lost a total of 48 men and 97 wounded aboard the Sir Galahad. Simon survived with 46% burns, following which his face was barely recognisable.

Chris and Simon

C – Simon, how are you brother?

S – I’m ok, bit stressed with some home improvements we’re having done. Other than that I’m tickety boo. I’ve got a lot of new projects waiting to start, but this damn virus is making everything so slow. It is what it is.

C – Do you have enough time for your family with all your commitments, because you are a very busy man.

S – Well it certainly was before the Covid thing. The thing is when I’m not working I’m spending time with my family and perhaps because people see me do a lot of work they think that’s all I do…
