C – I can speak travellers Spanish as I’ve been very fortunate enough to have backpacked through every country in the Americas. As you know the more South you get and the less Espanol, you’re going to have a few problems feeding yourself.

C – My Spanish isn’t perfect by any stretch but Colleen’s is a lot better than mine.

C – So Charlie, I’m delighted we’re chatting, I’ve seen you online quite a bit and for me I’m getting to that stage in my life where there’s a lot of knowledge. I’ve been learning about the world for 20 years and now I’m trying to refine my learning with a more spiritual sense of the world.

Chris has a unique military background having served as a Royal Marines Commando, an Army and RAF Officer and an AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter Pilot, the most lethal and advanced attack helicopter the world has ever seen, a craft he flew on three operational combat tours of duty in Afghanistan. His passion for motorsport lead him to fulfil a lifelong dream of starting his own business, V-FORCE, in which the coolest and most enjoyable skills from his military service are combined with motorsport and extreme sports to give the most enjoyable and rewarding experience available anywhere.

Chris is a qualified BARS Rally and ARDS Racing Instructor and competes in both motorsport disciplines. He is also an SIA Close Protection and Surveillance Operator.

C – Alan, how are you?

A – Not too bad thank you Chris.

C – You’re in a rush to get out of the country I believe.

A – Yeah, I should have been flying out four days after the lockdown started, so unfortunately everything has been put on hold including the return trip. This has probably been the most stressful trip yet to be honest , there’s just so many factors involved in it.

C – I’m terrible myself for getting ready to leave the country I’m awful and I’m not talking about a holiday or a pleasure break I’m on about maneuverers and adventures. Batteries, MP3 player loaded up, kit mustered, all laid out, double checked and have I got all my phone numbers backed up. Now I cant even imagine you’re going to a warzone, that’s going to be even added stress.

A – Yep, trying to find batteries, camera parts and all sorts of engineering pieces in a warzone is not easy. At any stretch.

A – It’s hot and I’m tip top.

C – It’s funny, when you came onto the Zoom meeting before we went live and I heard you say “Hi there, how you doing”. It’s weird as I hear you say that most mornings from your inspirational morning talks. I set my Facebook t0 have the one year no beer post showing first, so you don’t get that dose of negativity as you first wake up! For our friends at home, it’s Andy running through the forest talking about the benefits of not drinking alcohol in your life. That doesn’t mean give it up forever but for at least a particular period in life. It’s not about being a monk or something to that extreme. So from myself mate, thank you so much for those.

A – It’s my favourite part of the day Chris, just being out there in the wild and connecting with so many different people, with the truth being told, I didn’t actually think that would be a big part of what I would be doing.

Tom Evans made his mark on the ultrarunning world in 2017, when he came third in the 251km desert ultra Marathon des Sables (MdS). Despite entering on the back of a bet with a friend, his third-place finish was the best result any European had ever achieved in the history of the race. Evans astounded once again in 2018, when he won the 101km CCC race at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) – the pinnacle of an incredibly successful racing year, which also saw him take the top spot – and break course records – at the Coastal Challenge Costa Rica. At 2019’s Western States 100, a near iconic fixture on the ultrarunning calendar, Evans took third place and even broke the record for the fastest overseas time at the Californian race, clocking 14 hrs 59 minutes in his debut 100-miler. A British Army Captain, Tom Evans was little known to the ultrarunning world until 2017, but is now one of the world’s leading competitors.

It’s the story of myself running 999 miles, pretty much non stop, sleeping in my tent by the side of the road. C – … ‘so how much time have I spent in Thailand? Well the first time I was there Paul, I got what was known as an indulgence flight, it’s basically a really cheap flight you can get through the military, so personnel can serve their bases around the world. So I flew to Hong Kong for £40, had a really interesting time there, this would have been around 1992. I was celebrating NYE there, and witnessed a massive crush panic as people began to gather for the midnight celebrations. My second experience there was being almost a witness to Hong Kong gangster Yip Kai Foon on one of his jewellery shop rampages. Its such an insance place.

N – I’m alright, it’s been a long time since I was called that.

C – Respect where respects due.

N – Very Kind.

C – Was it hard for your ego in the Bad Lad series where you have to be a corporal?

N – No, not really. I’ve been a military training instructor all my life and you train recruits at the level you train recruits at. I’d actually applied for the role as a Sergeant Major. The guy thought I looked too young to be a Sergeant Major of that era and offered me a part-time corporal role. Which means I went on weekends or on their days off. So I decided it was a bit of exposure in the direction I wanted to go, so I accepted it. It then turned out that the guy who had my original place, was an actor and they wanted someone who’d had a military background. My background gave the qualification I needed to do that job. So they sacked the actor and gave me the job.
