M – I’m alright mate, thanks for having me on.

C – My pleasure, it’s been brilliant. I’m catching up with all these brothers I’ve never met and you can’t argue with that can you?

M – Yeah I’ve just seen you’ve done a podcast with Josh Pelland. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but I’m going to get into that later.

C – He’s a lovely man you know.

M – Certainly is yeah.

C – He kind of epitomizes that kind of elite special forces thing, because you know a lot of them are just really nice guys that just want to be professional soldiers, you know what I mean.

M – Josh’s story is pretty compelling isn’t it. You know coming from abroad, from Canada, all the stuff he did and what he’s gone through recently, I’m looking forward to catching up on that episode.

C – I found it really quite upsetting, because he’s so nice and the way he talks about his accident, there’s not even the slightest bit of feeling sorry for himself…

C – Robbie how are you brother?

R – I’m really good actually, it’s nice to speak to you. Your empathy and compassion really, really touched me. Before you pressed record I asked you how you were and you said I’m in paradise, and it’s all in there. I’m in content and I’ve got to contend. How do you get to paradise? Pain medication is fucking evil. I think drugs are the equivalent of a Ouija board and you don’t know what you’re opening up. I think when people talk about demons and sorting out their demons, I think they’re actual demons. I tell you what though, it’s a fucking field day for the conspiracists with everything that’s going on. What I did straight away in this lockdown, was rid myself of the mainstream media news, because I understood it was inflaming my panic, paranoia and fear.

P – I’m very lucky where I live down in Exeter now. I just moved here and all the pubs and shops shut so that was a bit shitty. But I’ve been reinvigorating myself with exercise since last year and that keeps me happy. C – Ryan how are you brother?

R – Good buddy, how are you?

C – Yes, everyday is another day in paradise. I keep saying that several times a day I’m speaking to that many people! How have you been doing?

R – Not much really mate. Working, working and working.

C – I’m really conscious of our time and I want to get down to the nitty gritty because you and I had a little chat a few minutes ago. We’re brother Royal Marines. Obviously former marines because we’re all old now. I say that jokingly, I really honestly feel fourteen sometimes and I think I always have done. You’re down there in Australia and you’ve got a mental Instagram page on which you’re just completely honest about your past, your experiences good and bad and it really seems to be hitting the mark.

R – Yeah, I’ve been really lucky with it really I guess. There’s a big façade you can put up when you post stuff up on Instagram and I decided when I moved to Australia I was going to be real with everyone, and just say what was going on in my life and what’s happened throughout that process so maybe it can help another person or guy who is maybe in the same situation…

S – Russian vodka!

C – I had a beer the other day, and it fricking messed me up for about three days.

S – Really, is your system that pure now after decades of drug addled insanity?

C – Well, it is. You know when I have a beer, I’m never gonna just have one beer right, but nonetheless it just makes me wonder how did I function for twenty seven years drinking every day. It is horrible.

S – Yeah, they say you’ve got a twenty to thirty year run on your liver and then it goes.

C – Hahaha thanks! I’m at the end of my allowance if that’s the case!

C – Jack, how are you brother?

J – Morning Chris, how you doing?

C – I’m doing phenomenal mate. I was thinking I need to come up with a new word because phenomenal isn’t good enough now! I was thinking phenmeganomical is that a word?

J – Go for it, just make it up. Brand it, that can be yours.

C – Don’t they say if a word appears more than three times in the media it goes into the English dictionary.

J – Something like that yeah!

C – I’m just going to say some keywords here because apparently YouTube pick up on the first things you talk about. So we’re going to say Royal Marines, Afghanistan, bodyguard and life coach. It doesn’t really bother me but I thought I’d give it a go and see if we got a higher rating on YouTube. So how’s life with you mate?

J – Life’s good mate, life’s good. Quite interestingly enough we’re in the Covid 19 lockdown in the current climate. I find myself to be enjoying it to be perfectly honest. I usually live a very busy, here, there and everywhere kind of life, which I thoroughly enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, I choose it, I love it. I usually get bored being in the same place for too long.

C – Yeah, I’m alright mate thank you, better every day to be honest.

S – Good. That’s what we like to hear.

C – It’s an absolute honour to finally get to meet, albeit through the pleasures of Zoom. I think Zoom is the bane of everybody’s life at the moment.

S – This is my second one, I don’t really know it from the point of view of using it, there we go that’s better.

C – I was trying to think, I had the absolute pleasure of driving to a podcast with Shaun Attwood or it might have been James English, and I was listening to your podcast. I’ve listened to both your podcasts with these guys on the way up in the car, and I was immediately struck Sammy not just with your massive experience as a prison officer but also the compassion that you showed throughout the interview to the people you were in charge of. It was rewarding to hear that there’s people like you out there. I think those of us that grew up with Porridge, you think of Strangeways prison and you think of was it Fulton McKay.

S – Yeah definitely

C – You know that rigid ex military type, and as I said it’s an honour to finally get to meet you…

O – I’m good mate, I’m really good, thanks for having me on.

C – Oh, I owe you a massive thanks, for several things. Not just the example you set, which is firing as I say. Also by doing myself and my girlfriend a massive favour by coming on the show. We have worked so hard now and you know you’ve walked that route yourself and taken action. You’ve been yourself, you’ve believed in your dream and if you don’t take action no one is going to do it for you. Forget the fear, take the action, but that doesn’t mean it’s not incredibly hard work. So the fact you’re helping me out Ollie by coming on for a chat, it’s massively appreciated and I know you are a busy man, with another book out.

O – Yeah it’s gone phenomenal but I just want to talk over that because you’ve hit the nail on the head there. A lot of people think by having a TV show and I’m sure we’ll talk about the TV show later. Especially the public points of view, they think it comes easy you know, they think motivation comes easy, they think it’s just a walk in the park, and that’s why both my books have been absolutely honest and also the reason the second book is called ‘Battle Ready’.
