British Bobsleigh Pilot | Adam Baird

Adam (Adz) Baird joined the GB Bobsleigh set up as a pilot ahead of the 2019/20 sliding season. He made his GB debut in Winterberg on the Europa Cup circuit in December 2019, when he finished 24th alongside Lawrence Taylor. A serving member of the Royal Marines for 12 years, he began his bobsleigh career competing for the Marines and the Royal Navy in 2017. Adz comes from an active sporting background, having competed at national level in powerlifting, for which he has a 247.5kg deadlift personal best in the 82.5kg category as well as rugby union and rugby 7’s for the Royal Marines with rugby league for the Royal Marines and Royal Navy teams. His time in the military has seen multiple deployments around the globe, including a tour of Afghanistan in 2010.

J – Great to be here

C – I’m hoping you can enlighten me on an area of life that could be healthy for me, I don’t know. I have a regimented and military approach to things, not in the strict sense. That’s not because I’ve been in the military, it’s exactly the way I like to live. I have a set of rules that I feel works. I feel like I experience life on a much higher level than the average Joe, which makes sense from the experiences I’ve lived.

However, I feel that I have a very strong connection with the universe and what that collection has allowed me to do, is to throw off all the other rubbish, because at the end of the day I feel like I am part of this universe. Unless you tell me different, I’m constructed of these molecules that can’t be destroyed. I feel part of the universe first and this body, Chris Thrall second.

Simon Weston CBE is a veteran of the British Army who is known for his charity work and recovery from severe burn injuries suffered during the Falklands War. On 8 June 1982 he was boarded with other members of his regiment on RFA Sir Galahad in Port Pleasant near Fitzroy, just off the Falkland Islands. The ship was hit and set on fire by the Argentine Skyhawk fighters during the Bluff Cove Air Attacks. His ship was carrying a huge amount of ordinance and thousands of gallons of diesel and petrol. Out of his platoon of 30 men, 22 lost their lives. The Welsh Guards lost a total of 48 men and 97 wounded aboard the Sir Galahad. Simon survived with 46% burns, in which his face was barely recognisable.

S – I’m ok, a bit stressed with some home improvements we’re having done. Other than that I’m tickety boo. I’ve got a lot of new projects waiting to start, but this damn virus is making everything so slow. It is what it is.

C – Do you have enough time for your family with all your commitments, because you are a very busy man.

S – Well it certainly was before the Covid thing. The thing is when I’m not working I’m spending time with my family and perhaps because people see me do a lot of work they think that’s all I do.

C – Yes, I’ve been looking forward to this and I like to hear the Angry Bootneck shouting on YouTube, because it makes me feel like I’m not the only one. The only thing I will say for our American brothers and sisters that Bootneck means marines, like JarHead. The only thing is I’ve been an angrier bootneck than you this last month.

M – Yeah, you don’t seem as quite as sanguine as me about the events over the last twelve months, what’s going on? Humour seems to underlay everything I do, my channel is not as serious as yours. Ultimately my channel is a comical take on the news with lots of swearing and rants. I try to approach things in a more humourous way, even though the world appears to be ending on us!
