Gaz – If I’m perfectly honest, I went down to Deepcut in Surrey to have the final interview. They said what do you want to join and I said I want to go into the Paras. They went yes everything looks good for that so go off and have your lunch, have a think about it. I came back from the lunch and looked on the walls. It had murals of paratroopers dropping down and all this sort of stuff and I thought, that’s great. If I find out I don’t like it, what am I going to come out with you know?
I thought well at least if I go into the Signals, I’m going to have a trade I’ll be able to use. So really it was that logic that made me make that decision and put me in the Signals.
Chris – Yes tell us a bit about training and what’s it like settling into Royal Signals life.
Gaz – Well the infantry training is standard training and I’d spent a good four or five years as a kid in the army cadets. Once you’ve got through nine months of infantry training with a bit of communication stuff thrown in, you then go on to your designated trade.

Sean – My trade was survival equipment and I worked closely with air crew and stuff like that. I did some survival, so basically packing life rafts, parachutes and anything that you get air crew to do. I did 5 drills dunker air, which was running around new forest and getting stripped naked afterwards. The interrogation bit that was easy so I got marked above average from joint services interrogation organization. I did a few ships company drafts squadrons of 771, search and rescue and bounced around Illustrious. Then out in the middle east a bit.

Royal Marines In Combat | The First Casualty | #117
Royal Marines In Combat, The First Casualty features Ricky D. Phillips with an epic tale of heroic defence during The Falklands Islands war.
Royal Marines In Combat | The First Casualty
April 2nd 1982 – the day that the Falklands War erupted. Just sixty Royal Marines stood in the way of an armada of thousands, 8,000 miles from home and with no support. The story that followed was one of a shameful defeat and ignominious surrender. A story which has lasted for 35 years. Now, with first-hand accounts from the Royal Marines themselves, from the Argentine marines who fought against them and from the people of Port Stanley who watched the battle rage on their doorsteps, a new history has emerged. It is the story of an epic and heroic defence on a scale with Rorke’s Drift.

Chris and Ricky
C – Ricky, how are you brother?
R – Very, very good Chris, you?
C – Yes mate, I’m firing, firing. We got over our technical issues.
R – Technical issues supposedly over, and I see you’ve got your coffee there like I have mine. It didn’t work like this on the BBC, I promise you.
C – Thank God we’re not the BBC, that’s a whole different kettle of indoctrination. You’re looking well mate.
R – Thank you, I even had a shave for you this morning.
C – I did too, I just didn’t have a razorblade! Ricky I’m absolutely honoured you’ve joined us today on the Bought The Tee Shirt podcast.
