Royal Marines King’s Badge To Kingsman | Kev Bland
Kev Bland served in the Royal Air Force, then became a Royal Marines Commando. He is now CEO of The Leg-Up Project. This was a direct response to the heart-breaking number of men, some good friends, taking their own lives. Kev has also acted in some major films, including Kingsman, Stratton and Criminal with Ryan Reynolds, Gary Oldman and Kevin Costner.

Kev – We got in these grots and you know there’s loads of stories that were spooky and all that. I opened up the locker and it’s like a cash bag you know, those canvas cash bags? I think they just got back from Belize so I stuff that in my car. You’re young and when you say stuff like that nowadays, it sounds horrific. I chucked it in my car and took it home. We had a few goes with this sawn-off shotgun and eventually someone says, Kev you’ll get seven years if you get caught with that! I’m only shooting bits and bobs so I ditched that. 40 commando was not for me and I didn’t have a good time. I had so much going on at that point in my life and with the injury I just hadn’t got a stress management technique.

Stuart – Back in 1983 I was learning the Alto-sax and they said, we’ll have you in the band. I said, just like that? He says yes, because you’ve got your parachute wings. When you join the regimental band, you don’t do P-company. You do four weeks basic training and then you go to the academy. I already saw problems just through serving alcohol to these senior nco’s. This world as a paratrooper in 3 Para, was going to be problematic. So I went and had an interview with a band master and he said, have a go on the tenor. I was good on the Alto and baritone. The baritone’s massive and he could probably thought we’ll get him on that because it weighs a ton.
So I went to have a few beers in the NAFI bar in Palace barracks. Then I met this guy from Grimsby from B-Company. I told him I’d just been accepted to join the regimental band and he says, you don’t want to do that. You want to join ‘battling B’, Gypsy platoon, do you know what I mean? Then he started listing who was in the company and there was all these kind of like celebrities from the Para’s TV series. Sergeant Riley, who is now a sergeant major Riley, although they called him Mavis Riley. That was his nick-name.

ambushed his convoy in Baghdad. Trevor survived eight bomb blasts and 76 enemy engagements during just three of his ten operational tours. After providing security for Prince Harry, Trevor was diagnosed with PTSD and forced to leave the British Army. His nine service medals include the US Presidential Seal. Trevor – I only found out I got the award in September. The patrol I was on in Baghdad at the time, I didn’t think anything different. We do that stuff in Baghdad, day in day out, but I never accepted it if I’m going to be honest. I was sitting beside my two OC as a session Commander, when a motor landed behind and took off half his head and he died. That happened the day before, so whenever I found out on the 7th, it didn’t really hit home.
I just ignored it and I didn’t tell anyone because we were grieving and you don’t rub everyone’s face in it. I was attacked non-stop because of that, from people saying, I didn’t deserve it. They identified every round I fired and where my rounds went. It doesn’t matter if it’s the whole magazine spraying, if they’re not hitting anything, they shouldn’t be on a patrol.

He plays the commanding officer of French soldiers who refuse to continue a suicidal attack. After the battle, Dax attempts to defend his soldiers against charges of cowardice.

Martin – Kubrick was 28 years old when he made this and the film was made in 1957. It looks like it was made for me, even though it’s in black and white, in the seventies or eighties. The quality of the film is because Kubrick was a master with his lenses. He knew everything about cameras and cinematography but when you watch it, going through the trenches using steady-cam and stuff like that, he was the pioneer of that type of filming.

Chris – I will hold my hand up and say when I first saw that footage, because of the power of the media, it really just seems like, ‘Oh my God, this is British soldiers behaving badly. You know, what are they doing oh lads, you’re letting us down. When I watched your documentary again, I just felt the way it had been completely spun and yes, all of the backstory and the context was stripped out to make it look like you were the biggest, you know what on the planet.
Martin – What was it all for? I’ve spent the last ten years with therapists trying to figure out who I am. You’re always constantly looking back and reviewing. Through ‘Diary of a disgraced soldier’, I couldn’t have made that film any better, it’s just the untouched frustration of what what I’ve been through.

I saw his pain and trauma but then when he wasn’t alive, it make me really think about how unsafe my childhood was and how I was honoring him in his death.

M – Good my brother. I’ve just been out on the hills and I’ve spent my whole day up there, so it was a great. The weather started out as such a beautiful day here in southern Ireland and then the hail came down. So we had a hail storm. We had everything today. The weather was wonderful and great anyway.
C – It is so important to get out mate isn’t it and to make that connection with nature so we don’t get too freaking tunnel-visioned by all this technological, urban, ugliness.
M -You’ve got to be out rain or shine, every single day and yes it’s beautiful. I think it was Kurt Vonnegut whom said, ‘We’re here to have a good time and don’t let anyone tell you different’. Whatever we’re going through, this is the day we’ve been given and we should make it a good one. I try and do that everyday.

C – Hello Dave and what have you got for me this week. Is the face of the Royal Marines changing for the better or worse?
D – Very good morning to you Chris and a big shout out to all the fellow bootnecks and frontline units there. Well we’ve sort of rounded the revelations made yesterday at the defence committee and we’ve had this integrated review finally being released. It’s full but of course what they’ve done over the previous months is this stuff keeps being drifted out in little snippets. Just as if it’s like a softening up exercise. So there’s several things happening in the same time frame. So let’s go with the Royal Marines and Stonehouse. We’ve got the same M.O. as drifting this stuff out in the press, so they want to shut Stonehouse. That’s the cultural centre of the Royal Marines. We’re seeing this gambit of a Rangers force coming in. The concept of this unification of our military was articulated by our permanent secretary back in 2015.

I had an email recently from a former special forces veteran, that said I need to speak to you and I’m aware of your work because I think just being in this field you get to know what certain people are doing, especially the movers and shakers. Hence we’re having this chat. I think we share not just joint concerns about let’s call it the appropriation of our very loyal military, but I know you and I see at at a structural level which I why I welcome you onto the podcast. It’s quite difficult for me because I don’t like to talk about the good guys and bad guys, it’s just not that helpful. What I like to do is look at what’s happening in the world today. Why is it like this? Who is controlling it?

C – Ben, how are you brother?
B – I’m doing good how are you?
C – Running out of clever replies, that probably aren’t really that clever.
B – When someone asks me this at work or whatever my usual reply when someone asks me how are you? I answer loving life. No matter what type of day it is, it’s positive affirmation. Sometimes good is just as sufficient, but I think if you say that enough times it gets contagious and other people start to say it whether they mean it or not.
C – I don’t mean to be rude to my guests but they’ve got to sort out the way they fricking speak man. All this “I’m good”. This is England, we’re British and we’re very proud about that. We’re not nationalistic but we’re proud not to have to copy other countries. People can speak how they want, of course they can but I do think though. I think people who are easily swayed with their language just start saying what other people say. You know like this ‘passed’ thing instead of died. They use ‘passed’. I personally think there’s a lot to dissect there…
