Gracie Jiu Jitsu Black Belt | Krav Maga Teacher

Few other UK martial arts instructors have such an extensive and authentic martial art CV. A former IKMF Expert level, Jon Hegan has trained in the martial arts for over 30 years. Jon is one of the few people in the world to be a full 1st degree black belt Professor in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under UFC legend Royce Gracie. He is also a BJA Judo black belt. Jon is one the highest qualified Krav Maga instructors in Europe. Although anyone can teach martial arts, in order to teach a practical self-defence system like Krav Maga it helps to have some first-hand knowledge in dealing with ‘extreme’ violence. For 20 years Jon ensured this was the case. After a six-year service in the Royal Marines, serving in an operational commando unit, he then spent two years “on the door” as a bouncer. For 15 years he worked with young offenders in various secure units, experiencing a daily exposure to violence. As well as teaching a regular class, he also teaches Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu at the Metropolitan Specialist Training Centre. There he has taught members of the Public Order instructors, as well as operators from the Special Air Service, and Special Boat Service.

C – Hello friends, I hope this finds you well. Welcome back to another in my what’s the royal marines really like series. I’ve been really looking forward to doing this for quite some time now, because I’m going to talk about Norway, which looking back at least was an experience I was so glad I went through, if maybe I wasn’t so happy at the time for reasons I’ll explain. So Norway is where the Royal Marines do their Arctic Warfare training. I first sort of came across the Norway experience as opposed to just hearing about it when I was on rear party at 42 Commando. So I left for training in February, bitterly cold when we did our commando tests and I went to 42 Commando which is at Bickley, just outside Plymouth, and I was on something called rear party which is basically guard duty. The reason being the whole unit were away on winter deployment or exercise and this was of course in Norway where 42 and 45 commando go every year, at least that’s how it was when I served…

CC – Hello mate, very well. Thank you for having me on the podcast, I’m a big fan of your show Chris.

C – Ahh that’s an absolute honour mate, I’m not always good at taking compliments, because I just do stuff.

CC – A lot of high achievers are the same, can’t take a compliment.

C – Yeah, what I do know is I have love and respect so thank you for saying that. This podcast and a lot of content creators will tell you this, and you are one yourself. You’ve certainly been in the media a lot in your history Chris, but anyone will tell you it all starts with a first move. An idea, a dream, that you put into action. I didn’t have to start to talking into that webcam, well not that webcam, that’s an expensive one and I started on the one that comes with your PC. Yes it all starts with an idea, you start talking into that web camera, when it’s not breaking down like it just did! When people start to respond and say ‘Chris I really like that video, I guess it’s a bit of a wow moment.

C – I was going to say how are you Tim, and now I’m going to say how are you colours?

T – I’m great thanks.

C – Is that the same in the army, we call our colour sergeants, colours and that’s an acceptable thing to call them.

T – No, in the army it’s called colour, without the letter ‘s’ on the end. It’s quite funny because I worked with the marines quite a bit. I did three deployments with three commando brigade and they were all calling me colours. When I moved into London, they all called me Sir. Then I had an opportunity to go back and work with my regiment and they were calling me colour, so it was quite bizarre the way I was being treated with the different regiments.

REAL LIFE Iron Man | Royal Marines | Jet Suit

Richard Browning is a British inventor, entrepreneur and speaker. He founded Gravity Industries Ltd in March 2017, the company behind the Daedalus Mark 1, a jet pack that uses several miniature jet engines to achieve vertical flight. He achieved a speed of 85.06 miles per hour (136.89 km/h) with the suit during a Guinness World Records attempt for ‘Fastest speed in a body controlled jet engine powered suit’. Browning has been dubbed the “real-life Iron Man” by media outlets around the world. Browning is an ultra-marathon runner and former Royal Marine Reservist.

R – No, I’m in Salisbury in Wiltshire, where my family home is and we’ve been based here for quite some years now.

C – Okay, so what’s the connection to Goodwood? Is that where you kind of test your equipment?

R – Yeah, we were just there yesterday setting up a new training rig for people who want to come along and learn how to fly one of these jet seats. We’ve done the festival of speed there, and actually we shot a really cool film that should be going out nationally in the next couple of weeks…

Mick Dawson is a former Royal Marines Commando, film maker, professional sailor and adventurer. He is best known for rowing the Pacific Ocean with friend and fellow ocean rower Chris Martin in a new state of the art vessel, Bojangles, which Mick built. In 2009, they completed their 7,000 mi (11,000 km) voyage in 189 days 10 hours and 55 minutes; a world first and earning a place in the Guinness Book of records. His tale of being capsized alone while rowing the Pacific is one you don’t want to miss!
