Horror Of War Ste Nicholls | Bought The T-Shirt Podcast #163
Horror of war with Ste Nicholls. An open and frank discussion between former Royal Marines Commando Chris Thrall and Rifleman Ste Nicholls about war and the causes, effects and management of childhood and adult trauma (PTSD).
Horror Of War Ste Nicholls
Ste Nicholls talks about the horror of war. The causes, effects and management of childhood and adult trauma (PTSD). This follows on from ‘The Gap’ interview in which John Dennett, a World War Two veteran, sat down with Ste, who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, to discuss their experiences of war.
Transcript from ‘Horror Of War’ featuring Ste Nicholls
C – For friends at home, Steve’s got his own podcast which we will put links to underneath. You talk a lot about trauma, it comes up a lot on this my podcast and it’s something I’ve got experience of. I think it’s only us guys who are making links between childhood trauma and upheaval. A typical sort of character whom will join the military and maybe feel a bit different. A sort of misplaced person in society.

Chris and Steve
C – Steve how are you brother?
S – I’m good thank you how are you?
C – I’m very well mate, thank you for asking. You’re in Iraq as we speak?
S – Yeah, currently on lockdown in Baghdad, Iraq yeah.
C – What position are you holding in there?
S – I’m basically working for a private security company. Part of the regional management team. So we basically oversee all the projects in our region and provide support for those projects.
C – If we go back to the beginning, it was 1 Para you were in?
S – Yeah, so I left school in the year 2000, always wanted to join the military, I had three other family members in the parachute regiment at the time, so my allegiance was to the parachute regiment. I was too young to join as an adult entry, so my only option was to go to the army foundation college in Harrogate…

Arctic Warfare Training AWT | Royal Marines | #75
Arctic Warfare Training AWT | Royal Marines Commando Unit, features Chris Thrall talking about the commando’s training in Norway.
Arctic Warfare Training AWT | Royal Marines Commando Unit
Ever wondered what it is like to fight in the Norwegian Arctic, carrying an eighty pound bergen on a pair of skis, jumping into ice-cold water and sleeping in a snowcave? In this podcast I talk about my arctic warfare training in Norway (AWT) in the first year of a Royal Marines Commando Unit.
Transcript snippet from ‘Arctic Warfare Training AWT’ podcast
Chris
C – Hello friends, I hope this finds you well. Welcome back to another in my what’s the royal marines really like series. I’ve been really looking forward to doing this for quite some time now, because I’m going to talk about Norway, which looking back at least was an experience I was so glad I went through, if maybe I wasn’t so happy at the time for reasons I’ll explain. So Norway is where the Royal Marines do their Arctic Warfare training. I first sort of came across the Norway experience as opposed to just hearing about it when I was on rear party at 42 Commando. So I left for training in February, bitterly cold when we did our commando tests and I went to 42 Commando which is at Bickley, just outside Plymouth, and I was on something called rear party which is basically guard duty. The reason being the whole unit were away on winter deployment or exercise and this was of course in Norway where 42 and 45 commando go every year, at least that’s how it was when I served…

C – James, how are you Sir?
J – Good thanks Sir, always good to speak to a fellow bootneck, and finding out another one of us has made it onto the online and media industry.
C – A meagre foray I think you could say but it’s all exciting stuff. I have to say I’m really honoured James, I really am, for so many reasons, least of which is the work you’re doing to protect wildlife. I was just watching one of your videos there with the lions. I’ve lived in China and the odds are stacked against these beautiful creatures…
