Martin – They both had the same injuries as the bullets had gone through their stomach. James had gone for his pistol and taken a lot out, so she sat with him as he died in the hospital. I was on control because you have one operator doing the radio to call people in and the two operators. Well unfortunately he died bless him. I was going to go back in the marines until I was interviewed by a major who called me a fucking cowboy.
There was about a month before I said no and so when I went back I was all bravado. This is where I followed McGuinness into a shop. You get all cocky don’t you at the end of your tour, nothing can touch me. So I’m doing a foot patrol through Derry and McGuinness walks into this shop.

Danny – My love for music started at a very young age, through my mother having the radio on. My father worked at a printers so he’d either be sleeping during the day or at work.
I loved records at family parties and I used to put the records on. I just loved music from a very young age. My imagination was making this picture of the studio on on a ship, somewhere off the coast in the Atlantic. That’s where it started, collecting records at a very young age and I wanted to be on the radio.

On successful completion, he spent the next seven years of his career within 59 Commando Squadron. This gave Jack a wealth of experience in risk management and operating in high stress situations. Jack won the British Army indoor rowing league in 2019. Jack’s next endeavour is to row 4500 nautical miles across the Altantic ocean, unsupported.

Jack – I’ll be the first person to go from mainland Europe, to mainland north America, non-stop, solo unsupported. That just means you can’t stop anywhere, not in the Canaries or the Caribbean. People say you’re mad or you’re brave and I remember when I first volunteered for 59 Commando. I could do two pull-ups and I couldn’t climb the 30 meter rope.

Gareth – It was almost like an anchor of stability and an extrinsic motivational factor for me to stay in. Imagine coming out of training after four or six weeks, without a diary. That would be an awful reminder of failure. I failed every run-through, partly because of my conduct on leave was just atrocious. I failed every run through and when it got to the day, there’s so many things that can go wrong. The worst thing about it mate is that as soon as you start th time’s on and you’re having a sense you haven’t got a lot of it. You could wrong foot and you could get caught on the sheep dip and you’re really up against it. You could fail and then you’ve got to get back. You’re flapping about the shoot, whether your weapon’s going to work

Tim – In Nepal you had a British army officer who would walk from village to village. I’m probably getting this a bit wrong because it was a long time ago. These young men would come forward and their dream was to be a Gurkha. They would have some criteria and I think you mentioned their chest would have to expand a certain amount of inches. You would have to carry a basket across a route march and some of these young men, they would walk for days to get to the recruitment post.

Robert Cardoza arrived on the set of Steven Spielberg’s, ‘ET – the Extra Terrestrial’ to advise the crew how to set up the complimentary Kuwahara BMXs, his company had delivered. When Spielberg asked if Robert could ride one of these stunt bikes, Bob promptly JUMPED his own over Spielberg’s Porsche! Spielberg promptly sacked the useless stunt rider and Robert and his BMX buddies created the iconic cycle chase that made the film.

Robert – When we filmed this, we never saw most of it. Most of the other kids never even saw the character. We were just riding bikes through this thing with this aluminum ducking system, with a blanket wrapped around it, stuffed in that little thing. The doll wasn’t even in there.
Chris – How come you all had head wear on and headphones? Was that some technical thing?
Robert – No it was it was just the way they wanted to make the kids look.

Chris – You go into your twelve months at Sandhurst, where you spend a couple of years as a non-commissioned officer. So in my case I sort of reached my ceiling at lance-corporal. Sandhurst was the only way I hit. After that I wanted to carry on my career and then you could go right the way through the ranks, which we call a late entry commission. Those guys just do a couple of weeks obviously, because they don’t need to to do much longer. There’s not much they need to be trained in, but in terms of when you get there, you’re sponsored by one of the regiments.

In 1984 he was awarded, ‘Young cyclist of the year’ by the minister for sport. Andy won The UK Freestyle Champion’s award and also became the Screensport Pro Champion in 1985. He held both the world records for both Bunny-Hop and People-Hop height. Andy made over five-hundred appearances on television and also starred in commercials for Kellogs and Readybrek. Twelve thousand people attended the Andy Ruffell show in South Africa and he also found time to record a top-thirty record entitled, ‘BMX Boys Have a Lot of Fun’.

Andy – Yes I must admit I suffer that problem. I’ve been doing a bit of mountain biking the last six months or so and it’s been a game changer, but I kind of tend to ride like I did years ago. You know you never forget how to ride a bike, you just become old and fat and it becomes much harder to ride a bike. So I’ve found out to my cost.
