Teenager In The Falklands War | Gaz Tombling

Gaz Tombling served in the Royal Signals and served during the Falklands War. He is also an admin with the Global Veterans Alliance. Gaz shares his Falklands experience in great detail with Chris, offering detail with often humourous recollections.

Transcript from ‘Teenager In The Falklands War’ podcast

Gaz – If I’m perfectly honest, I went down to Deepcut in Surrey to have the final interview. They said what do you want to join and I said I want to go into the Paras. They went yes everything looks good for that so go off and have your lunch, have a think about it. I came back from the lunch and looked on the walls. It had murals of paratroopers dropping down and all this sort of stuff and I thought, that’s great. If I find out I don’t like it, what am I going to come out with you know?

I thought well at least if I go into the Signals, I’m going to have a trade I’ll be able to use. So really it was that logic that made me make that decision and put me in the Signals.

Chris – Yes tell us a bit about training and what’s it like settling into Royal Signals life.

Gaz – Well the infantry training is standard training and I’d spent a good four or five years as a kid in the army cadets. Once you’ve got through nine months of infantry training with a bit of communication stuff thrown in, you then go on to your designated trade.

Who Dares Wins | Phil Campion SAS| Bought The T-Shirt Podcast

Phil Campion’s military career started with the Royal Hampshire Regiment. Phil went on to complete both the Commando course and ‘P Company’. Later Phil applied for special-forces selection and he served with D Squadron 22 SAS. Leaving the army with the rank of Staff Sergeant, Phil joined the ‘Circuit’ and became a top-selling author. Seen on national tv, Phil has become a well-received personality in the media and is now a proud champion of the Army Cadet Force.

Transcript from ‘Who Dares Wins’ podcast

Phil – Yes I was in the S.A.S. and yes I’ve been on television and yes I’ve also had some major problems in my life. It’s not all over and you don’t give up at the first hurdle. You don’t just go, ‘Oh I’ve had a few problems and boom it’s all over, the world’s ending’. It’s not that bad if you still have oxygen in your lungs and there’s still something you can do about it.

Elite Forces Discuss Flying Planes & Jumping | Jamie Hull SAS | #256

Elite Forces Discuss Flying Planes & Jumping, features SAS veteran, Jamie Hull who jumped from a burning airplane.

Elite Forces Discuss Flying Planes & Jumping | Jamie Hull SAS | Bought The T-Shirt

Jamie Hull is a veteran of the Special Air Service Reserve. Whilst out on a routine solo flight, his aeorplane’s engine caught fire. With flames encroaching his limbs, Jamie kept his head and remembered his flight instructor’s advice to, ‘Fly the damn plane!’ After Jamie had brought the plane down to a slightly safer altitude, he climbed out onto the wing and made a jump for it. The jump alone caused great damage to his body and with four degree burns, there seemed little chance of survival. Jamie sustained 60 per cent third-degree burns to his body, tissue scarring and internal injuries. He was given only a five per cent chance of survival.

Transcript from ‘Elite Forces Discuss Flying Planes & Jumping Out Of Them’ podcast

Jamie – They switch off with the supervision and they let them get on with it because they know they’re safe. They’re in the lounge, the snug or their bedroom and they’re watching untold amounts and a lot of it’s uncensored.

SHOT In Afghanistan | Special Boat Service | Bought The T-Shirt #251

Shot in Afghanistan features Toby Gutteridge, who was a Special Boat Service soldier, left paralyzed from a bullet through his neck.

SHOT In Afghanistan | Special Boat Service | Toby Gutteridge | Bought The T-Shirt

Toby Gutteridge is a former member of the Special Boat Service. He is also one of the youngest ever recruits to pass their elite selection process. Shot through the neck whilst operating behind enemy lines in Afghanistan, he was unable to breathe for over 20 minutes. Doctors recommended his life-support machine be switched off. With a defiant spirit, Toby pulled through and rebuilt his life. After returning to formal education, Toby attained a first-class honours degree and now runs his own company called, ‘Bravery’. Toby’s book, ‘Never Will I Die’, is a passionate account of life triumphing over death.

Transcript from ‘Shot In Afghanistan’ podcast

Toby – On an operation a sniper got me in their crosshairs and luckily it just winged me. Basically it was a million dollar wound I suppose. One inch to the left and it probably would have taken my arm completely off. It was the Dragonov sniper rifle. If that had been one inch to the left, it would have hit the bone of my upper shoulder and probably would have taken my arm completely off. I would have had to have it amputated so yes, very lucky there. As it went straight clean through and I was back out on the ground soon afterwards.

Falklands War 40th Anniversary | UNTOLD Stories | Bought The T-Shirt

Falklands War 40th Anniversary features veterans from the army, navy and marines, who fought to retake the British Islands.

Falklands War 40th Anniversary | UNTOLD Stories

The Falklands War was instigated on April 2nd 1982, when General Galtieri’s Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. 68 Royal Marines who were newly stationed on the islands, fought a determined battle against overwhelming Argentine forces. With little options available, Governor Rex Hunt implimented a ceasefire, asking the Royal Marines to stand-down. Unfortunately for the Argentine forces, Margaret Thatcher’s government was intent on retaking British territory back. Her government quickly set about sending a taskforce over 8000 miles, to take back the islands. In this Falklands 40th anniversary podcast, we hear from the troops who won the battles. Their actions ultimately led to Galtieri’s dictatorship coming to an end.

Transcript from ‘Falklands War 40th Anniversary’ podcast

Ricky – There were not quite 70 of us today and when we come back, we’re bringing the whole corps and there’ll be seven thousand of us. He said, you should have seen him, the guy was crying.

Andy – The company commander had called us in and he told us about the battle of Goose Green. That was the 28th of May. That was the day Colonel Jones was killed with 17 others of his battalion. I was in the first land battle and up to that point, we had no idea it was happening. My mother in Wales knew more about the Falklands war than I did and it came as a complete surprise to discover a battalion attack had been put in. It was a very gutsy thing to do and I’ve got great respect for the paras who were massively outnumbered with none of the support they expected.

To hear their C.O. had been killed along with everybody else was a real shock. The BBC world service told the world, including the enemy that we were about to attack. Colonel Jones said to his own group that he was going to sue the bastards when he got back and obviously he didn’t.

Exocet INBOUND | HMS Glasgow In The Falklands | Podcast #239

Exocet inbound, HMS Glasgow in the Falklands, features Andy Williams, who served in the Royal Navy and as a firefighter.

Exocet INBOUND | HMS Glasgow In The Falklands

Andy Williams is a veteran of the Royal Navy and served on HMS Glasgow during the Falklands War. Glasgow saw action early in the war when her Lynx helicopter severely damaged the Argentine naval vessel, Alferez Sobral. Glasgow then detected an Exocet missile fired at the Task Force and warned the fleet. HMS Sheffield failed to receive the warning and was hit, later sinking. Andy found himself just inches away from an Argentine missile that struck the side of his ship. Luckily, Glasgow managed to stay in the fight, taking on the role of long-range fleet defence. After leaving the Royal Navy, Andy became a firefighter and with years of experience, he pulls no punches in describing his work and his observations regarding recent emergencies in London. He now works as a trauma specialist, helping people to deal with PTSD.

Transcript from ‘Exocet INBOUND’ podcast

Andy – We got dragged down into the engine room by the chief stoker, to set about repairing the two huge holes on the water line. It was amazing going down the ladder and seeing daylight in the engine room. That just blew me away and bright green sea cascading through these great big holes.

Within a relatively short amount of time we were shifting a huge amount of water and we set about fixing it. We were freezing and we didn’t have a chance to put our orange survival suits on.

Atlantic Dagger are a team of both serving and veteran marines who have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean. Their epic challenge started from Gran-Canaria last December and finished in Barbados after a gruelling 3000 mile slog.

Transcript from ‘A Royal Marines SPECIAL’ podcast

Jason – I took part in Harriet nine with 42 commando. It was a good experience. I’ve done a wide variety of soldiering. We were doing anything from intel-gathering, to finding I.E.D factories and we were battling with the insurgents. It’s definitely a valuable experience and one of the highlights of my career.

Conor – Oscar came up with the idea of combining the two teams as Mitch and I had a bit of experience on the boats.

DISGRACED Squaddie To Cannes Film Festival Winner | LIVE

Disgraced squaddie to Cannes fim festival winner, features Martin Webster of Webster Films, an award-winning film company.

DISGRACED Squaddie To Cannes Film Festival Winner | Bought The T-Shirt LIVE

In this podcast, Chris and Martin talk about war, winning multiple awards and the dangers of Indian building sites. Martin had served in Iraq and been vilified by the national press, for filming an apparant beating of Iraqi youths. The papers didn’t mention that the same youths had been throwing grenades at Martin’s unit for the past few days.

In his film, ‘Diary of a Disgraced Soldier’, Martin tells the whole story of what actually happened in Iraq. Here Chris and Martin chat about war, Indian building sites, Buster Keaton and more.

Transcript from ‘Disgraced Squaddie To Cannes Fim Festival Winner’ podcast

Martin – We’ve just seen it with what we’ve just gone through for the last two years and that’s been mass hypnosis. If you’ve been trained in hypnosis, one could see the mass hypnosis over the last two years. All the subliminal programming and all that stuff, but only seventy percent of the population have gone along with it. When they wake up from it, they’re going to go, ‘Oh my God, how did I believe in it?’ It’s because we’ve been taken in by all these embedded suggestions.

The Bush War 3 Commando Rhodesian Light Infantry | Podcast #234

The Bush war 3 Commando, features Chris Cocks, who saw continuous action with the Rhodesian Light Infantry against Mugabe’s Guerilla forces.

The Bush War | Rhodesian Light Infantry

Chris served in 3 Commando, Rhodesian Light Infantry from 1976 to 1979. He saw continuous action against Mugabe’s ZANLA and NKomo’s ZIPRA forces. Airmobile in Alouette III helicopters and vintage C-47 Dakotas, Chris amassed over twenty combat jumps. The Rhodesian commandos were at the spearhead on cross-border raids into Zambia and Mozambique.

Transcript from ‘The Bush War | 3 Commando’ podcast

Chris – There were probably three or four fire forces in operation at any one time. Not all were operated by the R.L.I. with a couple being operated by the Rhodesian African Rifles. They raised the fire force strength from three helicopters and a Dakota DC3 converted. The Dakota could take sixteen to twenty pairs at a time.

What had happened, is the fire force would take the three helicopters and they’d go off to the contact area with the Lynx hovering around. The helicopters would go back and try and pick up a second wave of troops if they could. Depending on how the contact developed, he would utilize his powers and they would drop sixteen to twenty to troops. They would become the sweep line.
