Bravo Three Zero | Behind Enemy Lines | Des Powell SAS

Des Powell served in the Parachute Regiment as a sergeant major and served another 20 years in the SAS. A former PT instructor in 1 PARA, he became the Unarmed Combat and Fitness instructor for B Squadron SAS. He helped pioneer HALO, HAHO and other covert airborne entry techniques. The SAS were called upon to hunt down the mobile Scud rocket launchers in Iraq. Much has been written about the ill-fated Bravo Two Zero patrol. Des has set the record straight with his exceptional book, ‘SAS Bravo Three Zero, The Explosive Untold Story’.

Des – Parachuting can be high altitude, which is HALO high altitude low opening and here’s HAHO, high altitude high opening. It’s to deal with oxygen and you’d normally jump in at night, at 25,000 feet. That’s approximately five miles up.

I was in Air Troop B-Squadron and I really enjoyed my time there. I’ve talked about Air Troop, Mountain, Boat and Mobility. All the soldiers have the same skills, it’s just how we gain entry to a particular conflict zone, that are different.

Nick – To know that you’re okay, you need to be working hard and go on that hill with weight. You don’t go out and just wear a pair of boots, you should be running five hundred meters in a pair of boots or walking around with them and then do one mile. Then doing two miles, four miles and then ten miles. After a while you just do it, don’t you? It’s not about just lobbing straight in there.

If you break your training down very specifically and then start to put it all together, you start taxing your body and there is a lot of research that’s been done recently. One of the guys that’s part of it, got a quite high acclaimed award. One of them’s got a Nobel prize as well. There’s three elements within our bodies and systems that normally are relatively dormant. A lot of research has proven that if you can stimulate these responses, this fight or flight or this defense mechanism, these elements fire off and they they suggest at the moment that it can contribute to maybe fourteen extra years of life.

Nick – I think the first step that people need to make is, just try and find out as much information as possible. There’s a lot of information out there nowadays. You mentioned on the last podcast, that this is an open book to a certain extent. Certainly with 23, there’s a lot of open source information out there and if you go to a recruiting office, you can kind of get a really good understanding of what kind of level of fitness you need to go through, to start that process. You can get quite good understanding.

Nick is a highly successful athlete across a broad spectrum of physical and mental disciplines. He has won competitions internationally across a range of events. These include sprint triathlons, ultra mountain races and long expeditions across the world with the Special Forces. In this podcast, Nick tells us about his time as a 23 SAS operative whilst serving in the middle-east.

Nick – When I joined HRC I had to do a separate selection. It was devised by a bit of a legend that was in 22. I won’t mention his name, if you don’t mind, but he was an inspirational character and helped me facilitate my move forward. In actual fact, he was the one that approached me on a number of times and said, ‘I want you to go for HRC’.

What we found was that everybody from 22 and 23, were very capable SF soldiers. When they went to 22, they all got stand-up fails at the end. They weren’t right for that unit and much later, the guy who devised HRC, had a look at that whole political kind of situation I believe. I’d left by that time in 2004 and said, look this isn’t good enough. These are these are lads that essentially I have trained, because I devised this unit called HRC.

Nigel ‘Spud’ Ely’s soldiering career was with the Parachute Regiment, followed by the SAS. Spud then found work as a Military Consultant and a war photojournalist. His career has taken him in to some of the most deadly, high-octane, violent battles of the modern era. From Northern Ireland to Iraq, Spud has been in the thick of the most ferocious fighting of modern times. His book, ‘Bring Me The Arse Of Saddam’, is his story of trying to keep hold of his momento from Iraq.

Nigel – Yes I’ve got a book coming out in March next year, called ‘Goose Green uncensored voices’. It took me three years to put together and I basically traveled up and down this great nation of ours, to interview the guys that were there, including the civilians, the navy and air force. Also the guys that work there at the front and the guys that helped us win the battle. So that’s kind of an exciting project that’s been reviewed at the Frankfurt book show this week. I’m really excited about that. I left the paras, joined the S.A.S. and I was one of the youngest to join at the time.

I left the the S.A.S. then went on to do military contracting which they now call, ‘The business’, in Iraq and Afghanistan. We used to call it body guarding but now they call it C.P. don’t they? Then I became a war correspondent and I covered a bit of Afghanistan. Basically I wanted to cover the invasion or liberation of Iraq, depending on what side of the political fence you sit at.

SAS trooper and trainee pilot Jamie Hull, was flying solo when his aircraft caught fire. It should have been the end of his life, but it was the beginning of his story. With flames up to his chin, he brought the plane in, climbed out and jumped from the wing. As he lay on the ground, fully conscious, waiting for the emergency services, he could smell his flesh burn.

Jamie – I’ve got my left hand on the control stick, my right hand on the throttle and I’m banking around to my left. The fire externally that I’d witnessed outside through the canopy window, breached the cockpit internally and suddenly I looked down at my feet working on the rudder pedal. I looked down and I could see the yellow flame sort of breach and the flames were lapping around my feet and my ankles. So you know I won’t deny that initially there was starting to be this panic in my mind and I’m starting to take stock of what’s going on inside that small two-seater chamber.

Peter served in the British Army’s Parachute Regiment and Special Air Service. He went on to join the Rhodesian Special Air Service, The British South Africa Police and The South Africa’s 44 Parachute Brigade. As a mercenary or contractor, he worked in countries including South Africa, Angola, Colombia, Russia, Algeria and Iraq.

Peter – Well we were just going to go in there and do a house cleaning attack on it. Fighting in the built up area if you want to call it that with a gunship covering us. We had the whole place color coded.

The film, ‘Who Dares Wins’, features Mark Ryan, a former British Intelligence operative, turned Hollywood actor. Mark’s long illustrious career, includes acting roles in, Robin of Sherwood, Frasier, Black Sails and numerous roles in the highly successful ‘Transformers’ franchise. Mark is also a successful writer and has worked with DC Comics, as well as writing several screenplays. Ryan’s autobiography, ‘Hold Fast’, details his life in which he has combined his acting career, with a secret existence as an operative of British Military Intelligence.

C – I should just say that Mark Ryan is a big Hollywood star. He is also a former intelligence operative, which is quite relevant to the video that I’d made with John Hegan the other day. Mark has also starred in the film, ‘Who Dares Wins’ alongside Lewis Collins.

M – Lewis was a lad and a great character. He was the James Bond we never had.
