FIRST Into Action | Duncan Falconer | #65

First into action is the story of Duncan Falconer who joined The Royal Marines and went on to passing selection with The Special Boat Service, based in Poole.

First Into Action

Duncan Falconer joined the British Royal Marines at the age of 18. At 19 years of age, he attended SBS selection in Poole Dorset and was one of nine Marines to successfully complete the course out of 147 men. Most candidates are required to serve some time in a Commando unit before applying, however Duncan was given an exception. Later he was posted to 42 Commando as a career broadening opportunity. Duncan served the majority of his military service with the SBS. During his time in the military, he also served with the SAS and 14 Intelligence Detachment, deployed to Northern Ireland with each for one year and two and a half years respectively. After he left the Detachment he took a sabbatical for a year before returning to the SBS where he was posted to MAT (“Maritime Anti-Terrorism”) operations in which he was involved in a number of exercises retaking oil rigs and tankers.

H – I’m in the Cotswold, I’m really lucky, it’s lovely and it’s been a lovely day as well, really sunny.

C – A beautiful part of the country. I did a 24 hour race in the Cotswolds. It’s one of those places where you hear Cotswolds and my mind starts thinking hang on are we talking like Lake District or something. It’s not actually far from the South West.

H – Yeah, it’s quite central isn’t it. It wasn’t around Broadway Tower was it?

Arrested and imprisoned in India as one of the ‘Chennai Six’, Nick wasn’t just innocent of any crime, there was no crime. Stationed on an anti-piracy ship to protect vessels against Somali pirates, the six were arrested and falsely charged with intruding in Indian waters and the possession of illegal weapons. Nick lost four years of his life trapped in a legal nightmare in India, thousands of miles from home and his family, spending the bulk of his time in appalling conditions at Chennai prison with extremely limited contact to the outside world. Despite this, Nick refused to buckle and now he tells his full story of endurance and survival for the very first time.

C – On the bright side you’ve got a book coming out.

N – I do yes and I’m trying to promote it at best as I can. Hopefully during lockdown people can potentially read and take something worth of value from the book, especially when I’m talking about isolation. People may say you were in a prison and I’m at home. For people with mental health problems they feel they are a prison in their own home. I want to shed light on what my isolation was like and the stuff I had available, people can then think well I’m not in a prison and look at the stuff they have at their disposal.

Regimental Sergeant Major Baz Gray served with the Royal Marines’ elite Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre as both a mountain leader (ML) and course instructor. A trained sniper, Baz has served on operations in several conflicts, including Afghanistan and in recent years, he has skied solo and unsupported to the South Pole in Antarctica. Tomorrow, Baz will attempt to run EIGHTY MILES NONSTOP to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the formation of the COMMANDOS and to raise funds for the Royal Marines Charity. (Links below). Gracie Jiu Jitsu Black Belt | Krav Maga Teacher

Few other UK martial arts instructors have such an extensive and authentic martial art CV. A former IKMF Expert level, Jon Hegan has trained in the martial arts for over 30 years. Jon is one of the few people in the world to be a full 1st degree black belt Professor in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu under UFC legend Royce Gracie. He is also a BJA Judo black belt. Jon is one the highest qualified Krav Maga instructors in Europe. Although anyone can teach martial arts, in order to teach a practical self-defence system like Krav Maga it helps to have some first-hand knowledge in dealing with ‘extreme’ violence. For 20 years Jon ensured this was the case. After a six-year service in the Royal Marines, serving in an operational commando unit, he then spent two years “on the door” as a bouncer. For 15 years he worked with young offenders in various secure units, experiencing a daily exposure to violence. As well as teaching a regular class, he also teaches Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu at the Metropolitan Specialist Training Centre. There he has taught members of the Public Order instructors, as well as operators from the Special Air Service, and Special Boat Service.

C – Hello friends, I hope this finds you well. Welcome back to another in my what’s the royal marines really like series. I’ve been really looking forward to doing this for quite some time now, because I’m going to talk about Norway, which looking back at least was an experience I was so glad I went through, if maybe I wasn’t so happy at the time for reasons I’ll explain. So Norway is where the Royal Marines do their Arctic Warfare training. I first sort of came across the Norway experience as opposed to just hearing about it when I was on rear party at 42 Commando. So I left for training in February, bitterly cold when we did our commando tests and I went to 42 Commando which is at Bickley, just outside Plymouth, and I was on something called rear party which is basically guard duty. The reason being the whole unit were away on winter deployment or exercise and this was of course in Norway where 42 and 45 commando go every year, at least that’s how it was when I served…
