His books include, ‘The Myth Of The Airborne Warrior’ and ‘Pig’s Disco’. His new film entitled, Isolation, traces Stuart Griffiths’ extraordinary life.

Stuart – Back in 1983 I was learning the Alto-sax and they said, we’ll have you in the band. I said, just like that? He says yes, because you’ve got your parachute wings. When you join the regimental band, you don’t do P-company. You do four weeks basic training and then you go to the academy. I already saw problems just through serving alcohol to these senior nco’s. This world as a paratrooper in 3 Para, was going to be problematic. So I went and had an interview with a band master and he said, have a go on the tenor. I was good on the Alto and baritone. The baritone’s massive and he could probably thought we’ll get him on that because it weighs a ton.

So I went to have a few beers in the NAFI bar in Palace barracks. Then I met this guy from Grimsby from B-Company. I told him I’d just been accepted to join the regimental band and he says, you don’t want to do that. You want to join ‘battling B’, Gypsy platoon, do you know what I mean? Then he started listing who was in the company and there was all these kind of like celebrities from the Para’s TV series. Sergeant Riley, who is now a sergeant major Riley, although they called him Mavis Riley. That was his nick-name.

Royal Marines Commando Recruit Troop Boss And Kat!

Jock Hutchison is president and co-founder of Horseback UK. He was a commissioned officer in the Royal Marines and saw service all over the world. Jock was selected to be a helicopter pilot and served across all branches of the British Armed Forces. Horseback UK was set up to help veterans with life-changing injuries, although that demographic has changed to include civilians.
Kat Henderson worked as a nurse in Australia, before joining the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. After being an outdoors adventurer, she had a life changing moment from a biking accident in France, which saw her paralysed from the waist down. She is now on the team with Horseback UK.

Jock – We help people from the military community and others and our job is to help people that have really hit rock bottom, to reconnect to their former self and re-establish themselves in the world. I’ll talk about that as we go on but that’s our mission.

Chris – Is that how you met Kat and do you want to explain how that came about?

Jock – Yes I’ll introduce Kat. You know I was a member of our team, the Royal Marines which encouraged values that have never left me. Speaking to Chris, it’s great to hear that you know whatever happens in life, I don’t think that kind of experience ever leaves you. We needed to put a team together to help the work that we do and at the heart of that idea is the idea of empowering people from within the community.

Steve Brown is a 27 year veteran of the British Army. He served with 3 Parachute Regiment from 1993 to 2020, completing six tours of duty with 3 PARA and the Pathfinders. His work took him across the globe, from the jungles of Sierra Leone to the harsh deserts of the middle-east. Steve has also taught combat survival to service personnel all around the world.

Steve – There was one time we were out in Afghanistan and we’re heading towards a town. We’re getting to an obvious sort of choke point and this is dodgy, but we’ve got to go through it. You can’t just turn off a mission because you think it’s dangerous. Obviously the mission is dangerous by nature and while we’re doing that, the guy picked up a transmission on the radio and someone said they are coming.

Former Royal Marine Corporal Ric Coulson served on multiple operational tours including Afghanistan, Iraq and Sierra Leone. Ric witnessed the savage, brutal nature of war fighting and he took part in close-quarter battle. Former Royal Marines Major, Andy Shaw, is a King’s Badgeman and Sword of Honour recipient. Andy experienced the utter horror of combat in the Falklands Conflict. What these two men don’t know about war, isn’t worth listening to. What they do know about its effects, is this.

Andy – The war fighting wasn’t anything like what Ric has been through. The two main events that my organization went through, included an ambush that went badly wrong. It was a fighting patrol that was meant to go and destroy some enemy positions. We had a thing called a, ‘blue on blue’. That resulted in four fatalities and three men very seriously injured.

C – How are you?

M – Good my brother. I’ve just been out on the hills and I’ve spent my whole day up there, so it was a great. The weather started out as such a beautiful day here in southern Ireland and then the hail came down. So we had a hail storm. We had everything today. The weather was wonderful and great anyway.

C – It is so important to get out mate isn’t it and to make that connection with nature so we don’t get too freaking tunnel-visioned by all this technological, urban, ugliness.

M -You’ve got to be out rain or shine, every single day and yes it’s beautiful. I think it was Kurt Vonnegut whom said, ‘We’re here to have a good time and don’t let anyone tell you different’. Whatever we’re going through, this is the day we’ve been given and we should make it a good one. I try and do that everyday.

C – Mike, how are you brother?

M – Yep, well, good to hear you, good to see you.

C – So you’ve started a group called Veteran For Action, why is that?

M – It’s Veterans For Truth. When I was in America, I was part of a thing called Veterans for Peace, and I don’t really think you can get peace without truth so I started Veterans for Truth and yeah we did a whole tour, I mean this was after 9/11. I was a commercial pilot on the day of 9/11 and so obviously I knew the official story was a lie, so I got involved with the anti war movement on the West coast. I ended up working for a congressman and presidential candidate because of that work. The whole anti war movement is run by the war mongers really and I was really limited in what I was allowed to do. We travelled around the country but they didn’t want me to talk about the most powerful lobby group in Washington DC that controls both sides of the house, congress and senate. Democrat or Republicans, it’s all theatre and having worked for a congressman and presidential candidate you can see politics is like Hollywood for ugly people…

Steven Blades Coronation Street | Marines #58

Steven Blades was a serving Royal Marines Commando who has served in Afghanistan, then fought on Coronation Street. After surving a tour of Afghanistan and then losing an eye in a savage street fight, former Royal Marines Commando Steven Blades overcame PTSD to embark on a successful acting career, landing a role in Vikings. Steven has also made numerous other television appearances, most notably in Coronation Street and he’s now starring in ‘Sunray’ , which has been created by Royal Marines Commandos.

C – I’m fantastic mate, I’m absolutely delighted to be talking to you. It’s very kind you’ve come on pretty short notice. I came across your profile on Facebook or was it Instagram.

S – Yeah we’ve been connected on Facebook for quite a bit, I’ve been seeing your stuff for quite some time as well.

C – Yeah bad luck! It’s really interesting I’ve just been chatting to a fascinating guy called Ryan the holistic health coach. He’s ex marine and he’s down there in Australia. We were just saying about the Instagram thing, the whole approach to it is really interesting. He’s taking the approach I’m starting to take, which is just to be honest on Instagram. It seems to really resonate with young people now.

S – Yeah, I think that’s the best way to be on social media, I just try to be as honest as possible, but it’s a big market now especially with businesses and companies collaborating with people…
