C – Jack, how are you brother?

J – Morning Chris, how you doing?

C – I’m doing phenomenal mate. I was thinking I need to come up with a new word because phenomenal isn’t good enough now! I was thinking phenmeganomical is that a word?

J – Go for it, just make it up. Brand it, that can be yours.

C – Don’t they say if a word appears more than three times in the media it goes into the English dictionary.

J – Something like that yeah!

C – I’m just going to say some keywords here because apparently YouTube pick up on the first things you talk about. So we’re going to say Royal Marines, Afghanistan, bodyguard and life coach. It doesn’t really bother me but I thought I’d give it a go and see if we got a higher rating on YouTube. So how’s life with you mate?

J – Life’s good mate, life’s good. Quite interestingly enough we’re in the Covid 19 lockdown in the current climate. I find myself to be enjoying it to be perfectly honest. I usually live a very busy, here, there and everywhere kind of life, which I thoroughly enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, I choose it, I love it. I usually get bored being in the same place for too long.

O – I’m good mate, I’m really good, thanks for having me on.

C – Oh, I owe you a massive thanks, for several things. Not just the example you set, which is firing as I say. Also by doing myself and my girlfriend a massive favour by coming on the show. We have worked so hard now and you know you’ve walked that route yourself and taken action. You’ve been yourself, you’ve believed in your dream and if you don’t take action no one is going to do it for you. Forget the fear, take the action, but that doesn’t mean it’s not incredibly hard work. So the fact you’re helping me out Ollie by coming on for a chat, it’s massively appreciated and I know you are a busy man, with another book out.

O – Yeah it’s gone phenomenal but I just want to talk over that because you’ve hit the nail on the head there. A lot of people think by having a TV show and I’m sure we’ll talk about the TV show later. Especially the public points of view, they think it comes easy you know, they think motivation comes easy, they think it’s just a walk in the park, and that’s why both my books have been absolutely honest and also the reason the second book is called ‘Battle Ready’.

Steven Blades Coronation Street | Marines #58

Steven Blades was a serving Royal Marines Commando who has served in Afghanistan, then fought on Coronation Street. After surving a tour of Afghanistan and then losing an eye in a savage street fight, former Royal Marines Commando Steven Blades overcame PTSD to embark on a successful acting career, landing a role in Vikings. Steven has also made numerous other television appearances, most notably in Coronation Street and he’s now starring in ‘Sunray’ , which has been created by Royal Marines Commandos.

C – I’m fantastic mate, I’m absolutely delighted to be talking to you. It’s very kind you’ve come on pretty short notice. I came across your profile on Facebook or was it Instagram.

S – Yeah we’ve been connected on Facebook for quite a bit, I’ve been seeing your stuff for quite some time as well.

C – Yeah bad luck! It’s really interesting I’ve just been chatting to a fascinating guy called Ryan the holistic health coach. He’s ex marine and he’s down there in Australia. We were just saying about the Instagram thing, the whole approach to it is really interesting. He’s taking the approach I’m starting to take, which is just to be honest on Instagram. It seems to really resonate with young people now.

S – Yeah, I think that’s the best way to be on social media, I just try to be as honest as possible, but it’s a big market now especially with businesses and companies collaborating with people…

J – It does look a little bit corporate doesn’t it.

C – I’ve been told about what you’re doing and that’s obviously part of what we’re going to talk about, it sounds amazing.

J – Thanks yeah.

C – I’m all up for giving people the military experience without sending them to war. I’m all for peace these days in my old age. But yes incredible. So what is the SF experience?

J – Well it started off back in 2013. Tragically three guys died in the Brecon Beacons on SAS reserve selection. There was a lot of news coverage at the time and it got quite political.

One of the guys fathers, I knew him briefly and I felt sorry for the parents because all this political stuff was going on in the press and the media. There was little compassion for

the parents and I felt like I wanted to do something for them.

Arrested and imprisoned in India as one of the ‘Chennai Six’, Nick wasn’t just innocent of any crime, there was no crime. Stationed on an anti-piracy ship to protect vessels against Somali pirates, the six were arrested and falsely charged with intruding in Indian waters and the possession of illegal weapons. Nick lost four years of his life trapped in a legal nightmare in India, thousands of miles from home and his family, spending the bulk of his time in appalling conditions at Chennai prison with extremely limited contact to the outside world. Despite this, Nick refused to buckle and now he tells his full story of endurance and survival for the very first time.

N – Yes, you could say that.

C – On the bright side you’ve got a book coming out.

N – I do yes and I’m trying to promote it at best as I can. Hopefully during lockdown people can potentially read and take something worth of value from the book, especially when I’m talking about isolation. People may say you were in a prison and I’m at home. For people with mental health problems they feel they are a prison in their own home. I want to shed light on what my isolation was like and the stuff I had available, people can then think well I’m not in a prison and look at the stuff they have at their disposal.

Regimental Sergeant Major Baz Gray served with the Royal Marines’ elite Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre as both a mountain leader (ML) and course instructor. A trained sniper, Baz has served on operations in several conflicts, including Afghanistan and in recent years, he has skied solo and unsupported to the South Pole in Antarctica. Tomorrow, Baz will attempt to run EIGHTY MILES NONSTOP to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the formation of the COMMANDOS and to raise funds for the Royal Marines Charity. (Links below). C – Hello friends, I hope this finds you well. Welcome back to another in my what’s the royal marines really like series. I’ve been really looking forward to doing this for quite some time now, because I’m going to talk about Norway, which looking back at least was an experience I was so glad I went through, if maybe I wasn’t so happy at the time for reasons I’ll explain. So Norway is where the Royal Marines do their Arctic Warfare training. I first sort of came across the Norway experience as opposed to just hearing about it when I was on rear party at 42 Commando. So I left for training in February, bitterly cold when we did our commando tests and I went to 42 Commando which is at Bickley, just outside Plymouth, and I was on something called rear party which is basically guard duty. The reason being the whole unit were away on winter deployment or exercise and this was of course in Norway where 42 and 45 commando go every year, at least that’s how it was when I served…
