James Topp went global after he posted a video of himself in uniform, criticizing the Canadian Government’s hardline stance on enforced medical procedures. He has been a serving member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 28 years. James announced in February 2022, that he would be marching from Vancouver to Ottawa in protest. He finished his journey at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. James has continued to Phase 2 of the March for Freedom, from Newfoundland to Ontario. His mission is to uphold Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

James – Like yourself I was a member of the regular army full-time, an infantryman by trade. I had done a number of different types of training over the years. Then I transferred out of the regular army to the reserve army in 2019. I was still serving in a reserve unit here in Canada and I made the decision to make my statement in uniform.

There was an announcement and like you, I saw a policy here that was so inherently, undeniably wrong. As a serving member of the armed forces, I needed to do something to alert the Canadian public at large as to what was happening here.

Lofty – When he came back to the squadron to take over D Squadron, he wanted to do parts of selection again, so he volunteered. He didn’t have to do it, he’d come back and he said he would like to do endurance march. So when going back to the squadron, people wouldn’t say oh he’s come through the back door. I had breakfast with him at three o’clock in the morning and we dispatched him over the hills.

He got hypothermia and he died on Brecon Beacons. He’s not the first I’m guessing and won’t be the last. You know it’s the toughest force in the world for a reason.

Chris – What about those three troopers that died and where they did they came from? They were reservists weren’t they and they got heat stroke?

Lofty – You shouldn’t have to tell trained soldiers water discipline.

Unsung HERO Of The Falklands War | Mick Fellows MBE | Royal Navy

Michael George Fellows MBE DSC BEMG, joined the Royal Navy in 1955. Mick was Fleet Chief Petty Officer Clearance Diver and second-in-command of the team, when the Falklands War started. His job was to search RFA and Warships for limpet mines, after suspected enemy underwater operations against the fleet. Under attack, Mick’s team were tasked to investigate and defuse numerous unexploded bombs onboard many of the taskforce ships.

His team’s amazing and highly dangerous work, helped save the lives of hundreds of British personel. He is the first man in naval history to defuse unexploded bombs on board a warship at sea. Mick was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Another award came in the shape of the British Empire Medal for Gallantry, for bomb and mine disposal in Northern Ireland. Further work in the Royal Navy saw him receive the MBE, after the tragic Herald Of Free Enterprise accident. Mick served a total of 35 years with the Royal Navy and ended his career with the rank of Warrant Officer, first class.

Mick – Initially we left our position by the bomb and ran forward for shelter. We ran first into a mess deck and I saw a table there. So I went to dive under the table only to find out that my leading diver was already under there. He looked at me and said, you might be the boss but fuck off, I was here first. I looked at him, looked up and saw we were both hiding under a five-ply wooden table that wasn’t going to protect us from anything.

We were working alongside what I thought at that time and confirmed later, was a 1000 pound bomb. We had a bit of a laugh then decided, let’s get on with the bomb. I worked around the bomb clearing wreckage away, while my guys were putting out the fire. Then in between times, assisting me with cold chisels, hammers and hacksaws. We cleared the wreckage so I could get towards the tail end to see the state of the fuse. I realized after a while that the tail end of the bomb had snapped off on its passageway through the ship.

Stephen – We pitched the ladder and then we got inside the tower and onto the balcony. We had to pick someone up on the balcony and into the fireman’s carry. Then we had to get over the balcony and onto the ladder with them over your shoulders. That was what’s called a carry down. They don’t do that anymore because these were things that the women found it difficult to do. To pick up and carry down someone is very difficult to do, so they just stopped doing it. So people who go to the fire station now, will turn up and not know if they’re able to carry someone down the ladder or not.

Anthony – The problem any country is going to have, is who’s going to want to invest in a country where it’s not stable. The security situation is deteriorating, the economy is deteriorating as well. The Taliban were telling the Chinese that everything has been okay. The Chinese promised a large amount of money which was hundreds of millions, to be given to The Taliban. A small amount has changed hands but a lot of it has not.

Everyone’s just pulling back the actual reins and watching what happens. There isn’t just the Chinese who are interested in the natural resources in Afghanistan. You’ve got the Americans, the British and other European countries all trying to talk to the taliban.

John ‘Lofty’ Wiseman is a true legend of the British Special Air Service. He joined the Parachute Regiment in 1958 and immediately applied to join the SAS. He set the record as being the youngest person to ever pass selection, at just eighteen years of age! John served with the SAS for over 26 years and rose to the rank of Sergeant Major, B Squadron. His impressive record includes being Head of Operational Research and training the first members of the US Green Berets to return to the USA, to form their Delta Force.

He also founded the SAS Counter-Terrorist Team. On retiring from the regiment, his commanding officer said of him, ‘Lofty is a legend in this regiment’. John’s also been named the ‘Godfather of every major US Tier One Unit’. Lofty’s SAS Survival books have been international best-sellers and still to this day, provide invaluable advice for almost any emergency situation.

John – I was teaching survival in the regiment and the course notes were terrible. It was inaccurate so I thought the first thing I’ll do is get some good handouts. So I started getting everything together and that was the basics of the book. I took it to my colonel and he said, look go and get this published. That was his advice to me, so I added stuff to make it applicable to everyone, for all ages and and before I knew it, I’d come out of the army and the book was printed. It gave me the pedigree to then open my survival score and I’ve never looked back. It’s still in production now.

Steve – I was just myself and I wasn’t pretending to be somebody I wasn’t. I guess I was valuable in that the twins were inside. I was a small cog in a big machine. Rightly or wrongly, they were making themselves some money but also making myself some money as well.

Chris – The whole train robber thing is a tragedy wasn’t it? I met Buster once, I think it was on Charing Cross platform and he was selling flowers. He later committed suicide. When you look at the enormity of what they pulled off and then the reality of what they had to live with. It wasn’t the result that they all hoped for was it?

Steve – No, I mean it’s a fascinating crime, as it’s a crime against the Queen really.
