The Untold Story Of 45 Commando
Andy served both in the ranks and as an officer from 1976 to 1996 in the Royal Marines. He passed out of training as the top recruit (King’s Badgeman, 98 Troop) and as the best Young Officer (Royal Marines Sword of Honour Young Officer Batch May 80) and was awarded a General Officer Commanding’s Commendation for his field work in Northern Ireland (40 Commando Royal Marines). At the height of the ground fighting in the 1982 Falklands islands conflict, he was a rifle troop commander in charge of 32 men, and was tasked with operating independently from his unit, 45 Commando Royal Marines, in no man’s land. During this phase, whilst conducting a fighting patrol to destroy some of the enemy’s fire support systems, he ambushed what he thought was an enemy force killing four men. It transpired that it was a friendly patrol from his own unit.
This single event, coupled with five tours in Northern Ireland, changed his perception of himself and gradually life in general, and was the beginning of a long slide towards ultimate despair, and eventually contemplation of suicide. From 1982 until 1996 he managed to continue functioning in various command capacities within the Royal Marines, but at the same time was aware of a growing split between the rational external face and the lurking internal horror that was slowly engulfing his entire persona.
Eventually his marriage collapsed and the loss of his family, two daughters, and all possessions, triggered off the reactions that are now known to be classical symptoms of PTSD. In 1989 the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was unknown to Andy and by 1996 he finally accepted that he had to leave the Corps and country he loved in order to deal with this overwhelming problem. He bought an old classic yacht and with his new wife, Cheralie, sailed off into the North Atlantic to re-discover himself.
In the late summer of 1997 they discovered the beautiful sub-tropical Balearic island of Formentera and dropped anchor. It was here that Andy began the process of self-healing. On the 6th of September 2012, by invitation of the Commanding Officer, who was an old friend, Andy gave a two hour presentation to 45 Commando Royal Marines on his war and its effects. Not only did he manage this with no emotional fall-out, but that night he found himself listening to a number of serving officers who wanted to talk about their experiences and resultant emotional problems. Andy realised that this was the end of his 30-year battle with PTSD; and the beginning of a new career in mentoring those who are suffering today. Thus The Mountain Way was born.

C – Andy, how are you brother?
A – Very pleasantly warm thank you very much!
C – Yes, in Ibiza.
A – Yes my home, I don’t like to say that, but I do say it too often. I suppose it could be called showing off but I’m not a party animal. You know I’ve only ever been in one of these nightclubs once and that was to blow up 5000 balloons. I was working for 10 Euros an hour then!
C – Yeah, they certainly have got some thumping nightclubs over there from what I remember, but from what I remember from my one trip to the Island is they’re blooming expensive.

A – Yeah very well Chris thank you, how are you?
C – Yeah I’m firing mate, and I’m really excited for this chat. People will get sick of me saying this, but I started doing this podcast to chat to fascinating people who do stuff that I would like to do! Or stuff that I have done. Funny enough, you might not believe this but I have done the bobsled.
A – Have you really?
C – Yeah, I say it tongue in cheek because I did the tourist taxi bob, but it was still the full on experience.

Simon Weston CBE Falklands War
Simon Weston CBE is a veteran of the British Army who is known for his charity work and recovery from severe burn injuries suffered during the Falklands War. On 8 June 1982 he was boarded with other members of his regiment on RFA Sir Galahad in Port Pleasant near Fitzroy, just off the Falkland Islands. The ship was hit and set on fire by the Argentine Skyhawk fighters during the Bluff Cove Air Attacks. His ship was carrying a huge amount of ordinance and thousands of gallons of diesel and petrol. Out of his platoon of 30 men, 22 lost their lives. The Welsh Guards lost a total of 48 men and 97 wounded aboard the Sir Galahad. Simon survived with 46% burns, in which his face was barely recognisable.

C – Simon, how are you brother?
S – I’m ok, a bit stressed with some home improvements we’re having done. Other than that I’m tickety boo. I’ve got a lot of new projects waiting to start, but this damn virus is making everything so slow. It is what it is.
C – Do you have enough time for your family with all your commitments, because you are a very busy man.
S – Well it certainly was before the Covid thing. The thing is when I’m not working I’m spending time with my family and perhaps because people see me do a lot of work they think that’s all I do.

C – Alan, how are you?
A – Not too bad thank you Chris.
C – You’re in a rush to get out of the country I believe.
A – Yeah, I should have been flying out four days after the lockdown started, so unfortunately everything has been put on hold including the return trip. This has probably been the most stressful trip yet to be honest , there’s just so many factors involved in it.
C – I’m terrible myself for getting ready to leave the country I’m awful and I’m not talking about a holiday or a pleasure break I’m on about maneuverers and adventures. Batteries, MP3 player loaded up, kit mustered, all laid out, double checked and have I got all my phone numbers backed up. Now I cant even imagine you’re going to a warzone, that’s going to be even added stress.
A – Yep, trying to find batteries, camera parts and all sorts of engineering pieces in a warzone is not easy. At any stretch.

Royal Marines In Combat | The First Casualty | #117
Royal Marines In Combat, The First Casualty features Ricky D. Phillips with an epic tale of heroic defence during The Falklands Islands war.
[yotuwp type=”videos” id=”SPEy6HRiaPI” ]
Royal Marines In Combat | The First Casualty
April 2nd 1982 – the day that the Falklands War erupted. Just sixty Royal Marines stood in the way of an armada of thousands, 8,000 miles from home and with no support. The story that followed was one of a shameful defeat and ignominious surrender. A story which has lasted for 35 years. Now, with first-hand accounts from the Royal Marines themselves, from the Argentine marines who fought against them and from the people of Port Stanley who watched the battle rage on their doorsteps, a new history has emerged. It is the story of an epic and heroic defence on a scale with Rorke’s Drift.

J – It doesn’t really matter to me at the minute with this Corona thing going on, I’m stuck in the house no matter what.
C – It kinds of bring home the importance of routine.
J – It gives me a lot of time to work on my writing.
C – Of course. I think writing and podcasting are the two disciplines the flourish under these conditions. I call it a fiasco.
J – It certainly does, I don’t have the technical skills down for this, but I’ve been participating in a lot of Zoom calls, more in this last year than in my whole entire life, which is quite a few!

C – Yeah it’s great, having a podcast you get to speak to so many people you have things in common with. Out of that sharing you get great conversation. Sometimes I forget to press record on the podcast! I’ve lost all that, that’s consigned to history now. So, my gosh, we hooked up on linked in, and I’m very fortunate to meet people on linked in with such rich histories and experiences such as yours Andy. From the Red Arrows to commercial airline pilot. Anyone who grew up in my era watched a film called Airplane, it was a spoof of all the jumbo jet movies of the seventies and eighties.

C – Richie how are you brother?
R – Yeah I’m good mate how are you, thanks for having me on.
C – It’s my pleasure mate, anything about Everest, I’m all ears and I’ve got big enough ears as it is. So when you sent your email to me, it’s fascinating stuff. You spent a lot of time in Thailand I believe?
R -Yeah I was living there, between work in the Middle East and holidaying in the Himalayas.
C – I loved every single minute of being in Thailand, even when I got my nose broken by a Thai doorman.
R – Happens a lot that sort of thing.
C – It was still a great night! Little tip for you there folks, if you ever get mugged in a Thai bar by the bar staff, which they used to do. I’m not sure what it’s like in the modern tourism world there. Rather than trying to fight the bouncer, just go and speak to the tourist police and they’ll get your money back for you.
R – You don’t fight one, you fight ten as well.

Chris and Tony
C – Tony, how are you brother?
T – Good, nice to meet you Chris.
C – Yes, you as well, it’s the joys of podcasting, I get to meet some amazing people. All of whom have been just wonderful individuals. Also it’s not bad getting paid to chat is it?
T – I can think of worse things, we’ve been in worse situations haven’t we?
C – Can you imagine they had podcasting back when we had to do guard duty! We could have knocked out loads! So, as I’ve said to you before, my fans love all things military. There’s loads we could just talk about on that alone, and as I’m rapidly learning there’s so many people that have suffered some form of trauma. I think it’s the nature of the society we’re in that seeks to frighten us all the time. It’s set up to put fear in us through the media, and we’ve got this culture that makes people feel bad about themselves through the beauty and health magazines. So I’m just figuring out that it seems everyone has suffered some form of trauma.
