Tumbledown The True Story | Cpt Robert Lawrence MC Scots Guards
Tumbledown the true story, features Captain Robert Lawrence of the Scots Guards, who lost 43% of his brain from a sniper’s bullet.
Tumbledown The True Story | Cpt Robert Lawrence MC Scots Guards
Captain Robert Lawrence MC, is a former British Army officer with the Scot’s Guards. Whilst fighting in the battle for Mount Tumbledown, Robert was severely wounded by a bullet going through his skull. The Argentine sniper then fired shots at a Scout Helicoptor which was evacuating the wounded. Awarded the Military Cross for bravery, he spent a year in a wheelchair, being almost completely paralyzed.
Robert had lost 43% of his brain. Doctors predicted he would never walk again, but to their amazement, he eventually regained most movement. Robert retains a slight limp and a paralyzed left arm. The story was adapted into a BBC television play, starring Colin Firth.
Transcript from ‘Tumbledown The True Story’ podcast
Robert – At the time in the battle, I ran out of ammunition. I’d already taken the decision to throw my mags and I took to picking up Argentinian F.N.’s.
The trouble with that is because you never know what’s in it when you bring it. Could be completely empty so I wasn’t going to throw away my S.L.R. I had the misfortune of stupidly thinking I could change the mag on an F.N. It looks so like an S.L.R. but it has a different magazine clip. When people are shooting at you, you don’t stop and start examining the weapon you’re holding. So that’s how I ended up with the two weapons. They translated that into some sort of ‘True-Grit’ firing with both hands, which was pretty much bollocks. Myself on a ridge with my arms in the air shouting, ‘Isn’t this fun?’, well that’s bollocks as well.

SHOT In Afghanistan | Special Boat Service | Bought The T-Shirt #251
Shot in Afghanistan features Toby Gutteridge, who was a Special Boat Service soldier, left paralyzed from a bullet through his neck.
SHOT In Afghanistan | Special Boat Service | Toby Gutteridge | Bought The T-Shirt
Toby Gutteridge is a former member of the Special Boat Service. He is also one of the youngest ever recruits to pass their elite selection process. Shot through the neck whilst operating behind enemy lines in Afghanistan, he was unable to breathe for over 20 minutes. Doctors recommended his life-support machine be switched off. With a defiant spirit, Toby pulled through and rebuilt his life. After returning to formal education, Toby attained a first-class honours degree and now runs his own company called, ‘Bravery’. Toby’s book, ‘Never Will I Die’, is a passionate account of life triumphing over death.
Transcript from ‘Shot In Afghanistan’ podcast
Toby – On an operation a sniper got me in their crosshairs and luckily it just winged me. Basically it was a million dollar wound I suppose. One inch to the left and it probably would have taken my arm completely off. It was the Dragonov sniper rifle. If that had been one inch to the left, it would have hit the bone of my upper shoulder and probably would have taken my arm completely off. I would have had to have it amputated so yes, very lucky there. As it went straight clean through and I was back out on the ground soon afterwards.

I Lost EIGHT Stone & RAN A 100-MILE Ultramarathon | Podcast #248
I Lost eight stone & ran a 100 mile ultramarathon, features Richard Wilcox, a veteran of the Staffordshire Regiment.
I Lost EIGHT Stone & RAN A 100-MILE Ultramarathon
Richard Wilcox served with the Staffordshire Regiment. After suffering with PTSD, Richard became seriously overweight during the first lockdown period in 2020. He decided to change his lifestyle. After watching videos of ultra running online, he was inspired to take up the sport. He signed up for a 100 mile race and spent a year in intense training. By the end of that year, he’d lost eight stone in the process.
Richard has now taken on 30 marathons in thirty days, to raise money for the mental health charity, Combat Stress. In total, Richard ran for 150 hours and covered more than 790 miles. He’d climbed a total elevation of 61,582ft, equating to getting to the summit of Everest twice. So far, his extraordinary efforts have raised just over £1,500 for Combat Stress. Thank you to Andrew Marshall for bringing Richard’s story to our attention.
Transcript from ‘I Lost EIGHT Stone & RAN A 100-MILE Ultramarathon’ podcast
Richard – I used to get pretty out of breath just going up the stairs and just walking up a slight incline. A hill would have me out of breath and I would have to stop if it was a big hill. There was one ill on holiday and it was probably about 500 meters, with quite a steep incline. I’d stop off wide just for a breather and my grandkids on another holiday were making fun of me.

To find some way of channeling his emotions, Gary decided to write a book entitled, ‘Daddy and the Two Bears’. His book offers hope to all that read it. A must-read!
Transcript from ‘Losing Two Young Daughters’podcast
Gary – I met Michelle on my birthday in 1999 and I was going overseas. My friend was a mercenary overseas and I was going over there and wanting something to put a bullet into my head. My old boss was down there and he was having trouble with drug dealers. We went down to the pub to sort the drug dealers out and Michelle was in the pub. Going into counselling, it didn’t work for me and I was under the psychologist for eight years battling with that.
You know I don’t believe in coincidences, I believe in fate and I think that was. Some people might think it’s a lot of crap but I do believe in that you know?

Transcript from ‘Record Breaking Cyclist’ podcast
Kate – I was running in the blue mountains where I lived in Australia at the time and it was a great way for me to build up that integrity and put myself first. There’s the three sisters and lived very close to there actually in a place called Blackheath. I was in one of those towns very near to the the three sisters and there was a bush fire and it’s just smoke everywhere and I stopped for a bit to have a look.
I was quite pleased to get back in my hire car and bug out of there. Yes it’s very wild and we forget sometimes. I live in Britain now and we forget how wild the world is you know?

Falklands War 40th Anniversary | UNTOLD Stories | Bought The T-Shirt
Falklands War 40th Anniversary features veterans from the army, navy and marines, who fought to retake the British Islands.
Falklands War 40th Anniversary | UNTOLD Stories
The Falklands War was instigated on April 2nd 1982, when General Galtieri’s Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. 68 Royal Marines who were newly stationed on the islands, fought a determined battle against overwhelming Argentine forces. With little options available, Governor Rex Hunt implimented a ceasefire, asking the Royal Marines to stand-down. Unfortunately for the Argentine forces, Margaret Thatcher’s government was intent on retaking British territory back. Her government quickly set about sending a taskforce over 8000 miles, to take back the islands. In this Falklands 40th anniversary podcast, we hear from the troops who won the battles. Their actions ultimately led to Galtieri’s dictatorship coming to an end.
Transcript from ‘Falklands War 40th Anniversary’ podcast
Ricky – There were not quite 70 of us today and when we come back, we’re bringing the whole corps and there’ll be seven thousand of us. He said, you should have seen him, the guy was crying.
Andy – The company commander had called us in and he told us about the battle of Goose Green. That was the 28th of May. That was the day Colonel Jones was killed with 17 others of his battalion. I was in the first land battle and up to that point, we had no idea it was happening. My mother in Wales knew more about the Falklands war than I did and it came as a complete surprise to discover a battalion attack had been put in. It was a very gutsy thing to do and I’ve got great respect for the paras who were massively outnumbered with none of the support they expected.
To hear their C.O. had been killed along with everybody else was a real shock. The BBC world service told the world, including the enemy that we were about to attack. Colonel Jones said to his own group that he was going to sue the bastards when he got back and obviously he didn’t.

Ultramarathon Man | Dean Karnazes | Bought The T-Shirt Podcast #244
Ultramarathon man features Dean Karnazes, who is an American long distance running legend and best-selling author.
Ultramarathon Man | Dean Karnazes
Dean Karnazes is an American ultramarathon runner and best-selling author. By an early age, Dean had already hiked across the Grand Canyon and climbed Mount Whitney. Some of his notable achievements include running 350 miles without sleep, running numerous marathons across the world and winning many tortuous long-distance races. He has also been featured on many popular television shows, such as The Late Show with David Letterman and is a popular author with his books detailing his career.
Transcript from ‘Ultramarathon Man’ podcast
Dean – I was drunk on my 30th birthday and at midnight I said i’m leaving the pub. They said where are you going, the night’s young, let’s have another round of Tequila to celebrate. I said no I’m going to run 30 miles to celebrate instead. I said but I was still going do it and I walked out of the bar. I’ll never forget I didn’t even own running gear but I had on these comfortable silk underwear like silk boxer shorts. So I peeled off my pants, threw them down the alleyway and just started stumbling off into the night.
Heading south there was a town called Half Moon bay which was 30 miles away and that’s where I set my sights. Food is always a major theme in the middle of the night, as as any ultrarunner knows. As we’re getting older, we’re trying to refine our act which is I think it’s good credit to our generation.

Bravo Three Zero | Des Powell SAS | Bought The T-Shirt Podcast #243
Bravo Three Zero features Des Powell, who served in the Parachute regiment and the Special Air Service, during the first Gulf War.
Bravo Three Zero | Behind Enemy Lines | Des Powell SAS
Des Powell served in the Parachute Regiment as a sergeant major and served another 20 years in the SAS. A former PT instructor in 1 PARA, he became the Unarmed Combat and Fitness instructor for B Squadron SAS. He helped pioneer HALO, HAHO and other covert airborne entry techniques. The SAS were called upon to hunt down the mobile Scud rocket launchers in Iraq. Much has been written about the ill-fated Bravo Two Zero patrol. Des has set the record straight with his exceptional book, ‘SAS Bravo Three Zero, The Explosive Untold Story’.
Transcript from ‘Bravo Three Zero’ podcast
Des – Parachuting can be high altitude, which is HALO high altitude low opening and here’s HAHO, high altitude high opening. It’s to deal with oxygen and you’d normally jump in at night, at 25,000 feet. That’s approximately five miles up.
I was in Air Troop B-Squadron and I really enjoyed my time there. I’ve talked about Air Troop, Mountain, Boat and Mobility. All the soldiers have the same skills, it’s just how we gain entry to a particular conflict zone, that are different.

My Vietnam HELL | FR Phil Salois Silver Star
Father Phil Salois, served in Vietnam with the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, 7th Infantry Regiment. In his first months there, he saw his fair share of combat. Phil’s unit spent a lot of time trudging along the rice paddies, looking for an enemy who chose when and where to strike. After a fraught time in country and earning the US Silver Star, Father Phil came back to the United States. With his perennial faith unshaken, Phil became a Catholic priest and a spiritual advisor to his fellow veterans. Suffering with PTSD himself, Father Phil has worked tirelessly to help Vietnam veterans. His work has also included veterans from recent conflicts, such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
Transcript from ‘My Vietnam HELL’ podcast
Father Phil – We dragged him in, turned him over and he had received a round in the chin. It had ricocheted off the ground and hit him in the chin. It went up to the top of his head and he never knew what him. The guy said we need to go out and get these other guys, so I say okay but we’ve got to bring some help as I can’t carry anybody by myself. So a couple of guys went out with me and we went back out there. People were covering fire for us and we found a lieutenant and the point man. The point man was injured so we carried him back, only to find out he’d lost an eye in that injury.
